Souping Up Your Cell Phone

from the the-phone-after-market dept

An amusing article in the NY Times (yes, amazingly, they still require registration) about people who put add-ons on their mobile phones. What started with just faceplates and ringtones has grown into quite an industry. I still haven't seen anyone mess with any phones other than Nokias, but it's apparently a big deal. Nokia is even suing companies that make parts for their phones. They compare the practice to souping up cars, but admit that often it can hurt performance on the cell phone.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

What planet do you live on where you think this is news? There have been shops all over the civilised world selling this stuff for years. Oh, I forgot, you're in the USA.

      Re: What planet?

I've seen the shops, but the NY Times was reporting on the fact that it's "become an industry" which I thought was amusing...
