A good Economist article about how two recent, very different, announcements from Microsoft may represent their future. With all the hype about .Net, interstingly enough, neither of these announcements were directly related to it. Instead, it talks about mobile phones and game systems, and how both represent a threat to Microsoft's core business - and explains why Microsoft has leapt gleefully into both businesses.

    Microsoft and the Great Game

    Pretty soon Microsoft is going to face threats and competition from EVERYTHING. Are they going to get into the auto business? The refrigerator business? The "implant a chip into everything including your children to keep them from getting stolen" business? They really will have to take over the world!
