So Much E-Waste

from the e-wasted dept

The numbers that start showing up in reports like this are mind-boggling. No one seems to know what to do about all the leftover and obsolete computers that everyone has been collecting. They have harmful things in them, so they can't just be dumped. Recycling them is expensive, and people don't want to take on the cost. How long until we start blasting our leftover computers into space?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

What to do with old computers

One possibility which is described today in the Financial Times, is to try and recycle the circuit boards:

depends on how old we're talking about

I basically take em in, I mean if its a 486 or better (so far I have a couple of 486s and 3 pentiums...on top of my Athlon and laptop) and I tinker. I have a few of them networked and all doing something different. Its fun and a way to learn.

I also have my old xt with 640K that's still in operation...not much I can do with it (I still haven't figured out how I can network the thing hehe) but I have all my old games and stuff and its a lot of fun to play around with.
