Undergrad Brain Drain Of Engineers
from the liberal-arts-sounds-nice... dept
Many people in the US are getting worried that we're not training enough US engineers. First, a lot of students don't study engineering because they think it's too nerdy, but even worse is that many students who start studying engineering end up dropping out of programs. I'm not a big fan of forcing people to study what they're not interested in, or what won't be useful to them later in life, but it sounds like something might be wrong if so many people who were initially interested get turned off by the current process. Many schools are trying to change the engineering curriculum to include more creative and practical classes early on - rather than the standard theoretical classes.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

show me the money
basically--> Dilbert is right. We're a commodity and get treated like it. Who wants to be that after 4 years of suffering and toil. sure you can love the work, which is fine-- but if you're not content with coding at 5am eating Ho-Hos, why do it when your friend who creates nothing is on vacation in Tahoe?
