Using elgooG To Defeat Google Ban In China

from the doesn't-really-work... dept

Okay, I have to admit I've been simply looking for an excuse to post a link to elgooG, the backwards Google site, since I first saw it about a month ago (the creators of elgooG get extra credit for being from Cornell). Here's the perfect time. It seems that New Scientist magazine is claiming that folks in China can get around the Google ban by using elgooG. New Scientist is wrong, though, in saying that elgooG copies all of Google's cached information. It simply links to the actual Google cache - so for people in China looking for a way to get cached info, elgooG isn't much of a solution. Besides, at this point, I'd say anyone trying to do Google searches in China is better off just going to Yahoo, where they don't have to enter their search terms backwards... Though, it is more fun to use elgooG.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Why chinese can't use yahoo

The reason the chinese do not want to use yahoo is that yahoo has agreed to let the chinese government censor their content.
