Be In The Game

from the new-marketing-strategies dept

Following on the news of such ridiculous video game promotions as advertising on tombstones, changing your name to that of a video game character, or (even worse) naming your baby after a video game character, it seems some video game companies are coming up with a more reasonable promotion. They want people to send in their pictures and they may have their faces put on a character in the new video game based on the classic movie The Great Escape. I have to admit, I'm not a huge gamer, but the one game I play consistently (a baseball sim) recently announced the same sort of promotion. They want fans of the game to send in their pictures, which will be used for players in the next version of the game. Not a bad idea. The next step, of course, will be specifically "customized" games. That is, you won't just go in and buy the latest video game. You'll first send the company a "digital you" (with all the info and images about you), and they'll ship you a version of any game with you as the starring character.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
