How Fast Is High-Speed Broadband?

from the a-moving-target dept

I know there are some people who get upset whenever people refer to any currently available "high-speed" internet access as either "high-speed" or "broadband", since they believe we haven't yet approached real high speed internet access yet. However, over in the UK, there's an ongoing battle over what one company can claim is "high-speed internet access" is in their advertisements. The company has gotten into trouble with the advertising standards board over there for pitching high-speed internet access that wasn't that high speed. Now, the company is claiming that 150Kbps is fast enough, though many people laugh at that notion. However, as the company points out, they are putting the actual speeds in every advertisement, so it's not as if the people don't know what they're signing up for.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Prior to moving last fall, I had to make do with dual channel ISDN. It really isn't that bad. It connects so quickly it seems like it is always on, and with the exception of downloading large files, 128K digital was fast enough for just about everything. In practical terms, it is 3X dial up speed.
