Verizon About To Spread The EV-DO

from the 3G-for-everyone... dept

Rumors have been flying for the past month or so about where and when Verizon was going to next launch their 3G EV-DO wireless broadband service. Now, they're finally admitting that they're launching 11 new cities, and 8 additional airports this coming Monday and they still expect to expand much more before the end of the year. It certainly looks like their aggressive rollout plans are working. They say they're still focused on business customers using laptops and PDAs with datacards -- but that they'll launch EV-DO handsets and consumer plans sometime next year. Also, while the story doesn't say anything, the other rumors we're hearing are that the price is dropping as well, from the ever-popular $80/month to the slightly more reasonable $60/month range (though, this may only be for certain customers who do some negotiating).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    EV-DO = VOD for Verizon

Cross posted, hope you don't mind Mike...

    Full post:
    http://www.buzzhit.com/2004/09/netflix-warner-bros-test-vod-verizon.html

    Snippet:
In possibly related news (let's see if we can't lazyweb a rumor here...), TechDirt writes that Verizon is launching their "3G EV-DO" service (great naming job guys), a broadband wireless service.

The connection? Only a week ago, The Digital Media Jobs Blog had a Verizon listing for a Manager - Video Content Strategy & Acquisition position with the following description:

"As Manager of Video Content Strategy & Acquisition you will be responsible for the following responsibilities: Assist in the development, execution and implementation of the Video on Demand and pay-per-view content strategy. Identify and evaluate VOD and PPV content opportunities"

Re: EV-DO = VOD for Verizon

      Highly unlikely.

The Verizon job is for Verizon which (perhaps not so smartly) is quite separate from Verizon Wireless, who's launching the EV-DO offering. The Verizon offering is *much* more likely to be involved with their (publicly discussed) efforts to offer video over IP, whether it's DSL or (so they want us to believe) fiber as part of a triple play offering.

Yes, I do think that wireless will eventually play a big part in triple play offerings, the carriers -- including Verizon, are not thinking about it seriously yet.

    EVDO is picking up steam

We started a web site to track EVDO coverage, news, tips and more. The traffic is picking up and more and more people are getting EVDO. There are lots of exciting things going on: Sprint is jumping in the EVDO bandwagon this year and that should make it very interesting.
