How Does Cable TV Compete With The Internet? By Pretending To Be The Internet
from the ah,-those-services... dept
Remember how Comcast was just saying that they were going to focus on services and everyone wonder what kind of services they could be talking about? It sounds like they're trying to figure out ways to make television more like the internet by offering services like video dating over television. This seems like a strange move. There are already a ton of dating sites online. What advantage does it really add to have one over the TV? In some sense, this is like the various attempts to move broadcast TV to the internet, but in reverse. The internet is good for interactivity. The TV is good at broadcast. Why are they trying to bring one to the other and pretend that the other doesn't exist (and is already better at offering whatever it is they're offering)?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
