NY Times Agrees That Hearing From Readers Might Not Be A Bad Idea

from the if-they-must... dept

One of the more annoying things these days is reading a news article and realizing that there's simply no real way to respond to the writer, either through a comment feature or direct email contact with the author. It appears that as the NY Times struggles to figure out how they fit into the changing news landscape, they're realizing that putting up a big wall between their writers and readers probably wasn't helping matters. So, one of the changes they're looking to implement will be a better system for contacting writers of pieces to allow them to better interact with the community they're serving.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Boy, are those authors in for a treat.

I'd say one out of fifty comments I get is thoughtful discourse. Most are personal shots at the author because of position differences.

I've long lamented the Star Telegrams policy on registration but I applaud them for including email address of the person that writes each story. As I recall, I've used the feature twice, once to complain and once to praise.
