Well, Fine, We'll Just Take Our Own Internet And Go Home

from the build-your-own dept

With continuing questions and complaints about who gets to govern the internet, it looks like some are trying to build another internet that won't be mostly controlled by the US. Apparently, the idea would be to do away with TLDs completely (so this site would just be www.techdirt with no .com or anything afterwards). That certainly would settle plenty of the complaints people have over various pointless new TLDs that only seem to serve to enrich registrars.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Well actually, the techdirt site also maps to just techdirt.com, so it would map to both www.techdirt and just plain techdirt.

Let's see... what would an internet that isn't "mostly controlled by the US" look like?
        No ebay
        No google
        No yahoo
        No MSN
        No craigslist
        No Techdirt (?!)
enjoy that one, foreigners! i think i'll stay over here on the real internet, led by good old american innovation!

There's nothing that pervents a single site to be accessible via both 'nets. In fact, if the new network takes off, which I very much doubt, this is what most people would do. It would still be HTTP over something that looks like TCPIP, right?

          *cough* what a moron!

          way to miss the point...

MSN, Craigslist, techdirt, google aren't "US" controled.

Go read the article and read about domain registrars sometime.

You don't, and you never did; it just became customary to give your dedicated websever the name "www.yourdomain.whatever" because it was usually a physically seperate machine with an IP address different from "yourdomain.whatever".

Re: the whole damn anming thing is stupid...

I should point out that many, many folks don't just have a www.webaddress.com Of those that do, generally both www.webaddress.com or simply webaddress.com often both work.

Take our site as an example. www.phibian.com and phibian.com both point to our website. However, we also use other bits of text to point to different websites or services that we have online.

For instance, if you are looking for a demo of any of our products, if a demo is available, it is accessible under productname.demo.phibian.com.

Quite a number of organizations use similar schemes for hosting web applications such as webmail.

Unfortunately, people are so used to the www, that it is confusing when no www is required. We generally allow a www in front no matter what (some exceptions) because it results in fewer support calls. Like it or not, www is here to stay for at least a few more years.

what makes you think the internet is controlled by the US in the first place? it's mighty arrogant for any of you to think that the internet belongs to the US.

Yeah, _the internet_ doesn't "belong" to any country or entity. Neither does America have any control over it. DARPA developed the technology that the web is based on, but that's it. And the "US internet" "with all its..." spyware, etc....most of those popups don't originate in America, probably...

    No Subject Given

Although complaining about the US is very vogue, I can't imagine any other institution that would have done a better job managing the internet infrastructure. The thought of the UN running it makes me shudder.

      Re: No Subject Given

So if we follow this comment to its logical conclusion, you would also like the US government to manage all health care, all security both public and private, control all airlines, to say nothing of having the ability to allow or restrict the free flow of information?

You voted for W. didn’t you?

I think you're a bit confused about what the phrase 'logical conclusion' means. You seem to be using it as a synonym for 'Waah, stomp my foot.'
What free flow of information on the internet has the US blocked (that wasn't blatantly illegal)? Compare that to the micromanagement we could expect from the UN, or that we already see in many other countries.

    Sounds Good

Does anyone really like the US internet, with all its spam, popups, adware? Why shouldn't others build better internets? Fragmentation will work better against malware writers too, if their tricks won't work on all internets.

    new internet

you would still be able to access both nets, i'm assumeing of course that bandwidth would overlap. it would make sure that the internet would remain an open voice for all people re:china scensoring their media including internet. things like the internet shouldnt be in then hands of government or any single entity. too much corruption in politions, from every party. keep the internet in the hands of the people. its information. thats where it belongs.

    "US controlled"

Ah yes, forgot to point out: "mostly controlled by the US," the way I read it, means "The largest portals and sites on the internet are owned by American companies" not "The United States government dictates how the intarweb works"

    "Controlled"

Um, controlled here means control of the DNS system currently used, not the hardware, the protocols, or the sites. You could start Joe's Names 'n Numbers and replace it if you could get enough people to agree (that would be the hard part, of course).

    Ha Ha

Ha Ha, that's a good one. A large scale network designed and managed by Turks. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Turkey - High Tech. ###To-do list. Wash camel. Smack wife around. Belittle daughter for overcooked dog. Change IP on domain and update all BGP routers###. Think I'll wait until version 2.0 (and or hell freezes over) before I care.
