Apparently Free Text Ads Not Enough To Calm UK Firm That Used The G-mail Name

from the off-to-court dept

Right after Google first launched Gmail, a research firm in the UK pointed out that they already had an email system named G-Mail, and they believe Google was violating the trademark. Well, the two firms have been discussing the matter for 15 months, and whatever Google's been offering for the rights to the name apparently hasn't been enough. The firm is getting ready to take Google to court over the name. Of course, one reason why Google may not have been willing to give in to whatever demands the company had was that they might have a pretty good claim. The research firm's G-Mail wasn't really a regular email system, and you could make a very convincing argument that there's unlikely to be any confusion -- which is the point of trademark law, after all.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    For What It's Worth

i'm pretty drunk right now so everything i have to say has truthfully got to be taken with a grain of salt. Google has been good to everyone. they've helped the open source community to the catastrophe made by Katrina. how could a organization like Google steal an email base like G-mail.... actually Gmail. it's really unbelievable to think of such a crime......
