CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Day One

Here at the fall CTIA show in San Francisco, things got rolling today. There was the usual flurry of announcements, many of them pretty pointless. The show floor was only briefly open today, so there will be more news coming from there tomorrow, but the focus of the show seems much more skewed to the entertainment side of things rather than IT. Content-centric MVNOs are getting a lot of attention, like Mobile ESPN and Amp'd, which is shaping up to look like it's going to pose some serious competition for incumbent carriers for the 18- to 35-year-old market. Multimedia is big too, with mobile music and video providers all over the place. That's a market that looks like it's overheating before it ever even gets started -- you can't help but feel that many of the companies pitching multimedia services won't be around at next year's show, particularly when you've got so many companies lining up to deliver mobile video when demand remains unclear.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
