Steve Jobs Fires Latest Salvo In Apple-Moto War Of Words

from the no-lovefest-here dept

The "we're a happy family" act between Apple and Motorola lasted for about 15 minutes after the launch of the iTunes phone, until Apple completely stole the thunder by unveiling the iPod nano. The verdict? Boo for the ROKR, which hasn't sold well, and yay for the nano, which has. This, of course lead to Moto's CEO saying "screw the nano," while an Apple exec later trashed the ROKR. Now, Steve Jobs -- who labeled working on the ROKR as a learning experience for Apple -- has made the latest statement, or non-statement, really. He said in an interview that Apple isn't done with mobile phones, adding "Cingular has been great to work with" -- leaving out any mention of its actual handset partner. It really sounds like the Apple-Motorola partnership is finished, with the question now being if Apple will work with another manufacturer or finally bring out the long-rumored "iPhone" on its own.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

And while they fight between themselves, Sony quietly comes out with a REAL music phone: the W900.

    interesting

I was looking forward to the eventual release of an iPhone, until Jobs pinned his colours to the mast with the whole video download thing. Rather than complete his media centre iMac by including TV watch/record features, he chose to attempt to charge us to buy poor quality video downloads. Shame...

We can no doublt look forward to mobile access to iTunes being restricted to gprs/ 3g downloads rather than sync with itunes... or something equally crap the delivers 90% - at least we can count on someone hacking the remaining 10% on download.com!
