Cable Companies Think This Is Interesting?
Last week at the US mobile industry's big trade show in Las Vegas, Time Warner CEO Glenn Britt said that cable companies had to do more than just add cell phone service to the bundle of services they offer, and that doing so was "not all that interesting". Now, the cable companies involved in a joint venture with Sprint Nextel have released a few details about its launch, scheduled for the second half of the year, and it sounds like their initial ideas, well, are not all that interesting. Users will be able to access TV listings on their mobile phone, and if they also subscribe to home phone service from their cable company, will have one integrated voice mailbox for both fixed and wireless service. They'll also be able to -- wait for it -- check their email from their cell phone, a service offered by, oh, thousands of companies already. Most of these services only offer benefits to people who use other services from the cable company, like its home phone service, or, in the case of email, its email system. So with that in mind, what's the idea here -- innovative services, or simply drawing people into the bundle?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
