Human Smut Scanners Needed At Photobucket And MySpace
from the another-job-for-the-digital-working-class... dept
We were just talking about digital working class jobs and how web filters suck -- so is it any surprise that some companies are now rapidly trying to hire human smut scanners to spend their days staring at photo after photo to try to catch "bad" pictures quickly? Specifically, this is targeted at MySpace, which gets so much bad publicity due to those who misuse the site. With politicians looking to fight back against MySpace, the company has been building up its own roster of employees to monitor as much as possible -- and also put pressure on Photobucket (the main service used by MySpace users to host images on MySpace) to hire a similar group of human watchers. As the article notes, software just isn't cut out for the job -- so, instead, people sit at computers and scan approximately 200 random photos per minute, looking for anything naughty to delete. Quite a job, right? Of course, both companies might find a better solution in distributing the workload. I'm reminded of Jay Walker's plans to build a massive "neighborhood watch" system, whereby people stuck at home could earn some extra money staring at photos taken from security cameras at various locations. Distributing the workload over large groups of people and paying them for each photo reviewed could help these companies build up their "human" filters much faster. In fact, this seems like just the type of set up that Amazon's Mechanical Turk was designed to do.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: where can I sign up for tha gig!
It would be something like$.005/pic, so at that rate 200pics/minute = $1 which then equals $60/hour which is roughly equivalent to $120k
Nevermind, as you were...

looks like a job for CrazyPunk
I am currently stuck home with no decent income. I like working with pcs and am good at it too and am willing to "scan for smut" as a job. It should be easy, look at a pic, click GO or DEL and move on to the next one. Kinda like the rating system on ratemyfinger/poo.com but then with two choices.

Spammers and Liars Ruined Myspace
Myspace: Good in theory, terrible in execution.
Sigh...I remember the days before I had "identity theft" (so to speak) in that wretched place. And I actually only had FRIENDS as friends! And still...argggh...I'm safe here...I guess...
