Next On CBS -- CSI: Breakfast Buffet

from the over-easy-scrambled-or-with-ads? dept

This idea really doesn't sound like it's all it's cracked up to be: CBS plans to advertise its fall lineup on egg shells. Using a process typically only used to etch expiration dates on eggs, the network will imprint its eye logo and egg-related taglines about three of its shows on 35 million eggs in September and October. The eggs will be sold by one grocery company on the East Coast, so it's hard to see the campaign having much of an impact beyond the media attention it's sure to generate. Perhaps a bigger question is how consumers will respond to their breakfast and baking being interrupted by advertising. Consumers often receive some benefit from being exposed to advertising, as CBS should know, since it's the network's business model. Does that mean the ad-laden eggs will be subsidized in price? Seems like this move could leave the broadcaster with (yeah, you guessed it) egg on its face.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Will CBS do a giveaway of a dozen eggs for everyone that buys old news clips?

How is that for a product tie-in?

    Morning show

Will they also put a warning about the possible hazards of leaving eggs out for too long while reading them? Can see this for morning show ads, that makes some sense. Wi

A flop just waiting to happen...

When we cook eggs in my house, we tend to crack them open and throw away the shells. While this is a novel idea, I also think it's a monumental waste of money on something that very few people will even look at, let alone pay attention to.

    It just worked.

The eggs will be sold by one grocery company on the East Coast, so it's hard to see the campaign having much of an impact beyond the media attention it's sure to generate. ...as with this posting.

eggs could be just the start

First they do eggs and the next thing we might see is ads on toilet paper. (maybe I shouldn't give them any ideas)

        YES! LMAO.

Personally, I can't wait to wipe my a$$ with some company logos. Who here hasn't wanted to do that with, say, MS or Apple, or HP...

    Fun With Epidemiology

Now it will be a fun project for graduate students in health science fields to do a case control study linking CBS eggs to increased risks of food poisoning. Should one use a logistic regression model, or a Poisson regression model based on the number of ER admissions for patients squirting green CBS soup?

    Be Prepared

Be prepared for the coming revolution where advertising is inescapable. Every single product you touch with have some form of advertising.
