Glenn Beck Didn't Rape And Murder Anyone... But He Doesn't Want Websites Discussing It

Ok, first off, I'll say this: I don't watch 24-hour cable news shows. In the rare moments when I catch any of the talking heads for any of those networks (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC), it makes me somewhat crazy, because none of them seem to have the slightest common sense. Frankly, they're all just a bunch of entertainers who appear to either be completely clueless, or exaggerate and lie for effect. I have little time for such people -- no matter what ideological bent they happen to come from. One of the popular tactics of such shows, is to use the ever popular "report on a rumor" setup, which lets them insinuate something, without ever officially stepping up and saying it themselves. The simplest form is the "some are saying..." lead in that lets these folks spend plenty of time discussing things without ever actually investigating if they're true. But, at times it goes much deeper into finding some random conspiracy theorist, and building them up into a "movement." It seems to happen pretty regularly, and it's rather silly.

In the last couple of weeks, a random internet meme apparently sprung up to highlight this sort of reporting, initiated in a comment on the ever-excellent Fark, it involved a commenter questioning: "Why haven't we had an official response to the rumor that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990?" The idea, which seems plain to many involved, is not to actually suggest that Glenn Beck did such a thing -- but to highlight this tactic of making a totally bogus rumor into "news" by stating it, and wondering why there hasn't been a denial. A bunch of folks have picked up on this claim and run with it (apparently greatly upsetting some loyal Beck fans), turning it into one of those internet memes with legs.

Someone -- quite anonymous -- then set up a website to chronicle all of this, called (appropriately, given the meme): GlennBeckRapedAndMurderedAYoungGirlIn1990.com. The site itself is clear that it's a parody, attempting to highlight this sort of "news" tactic, and the fact that it's often employed by Beck:

This site is parody/satire. We assume Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven't yet seen proof that he didn't. But we think Glenn Beck definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and misinformation.

It turns out that Glenn Beck isn't happy about this either. He's filed a domain name dispute over the domain name, claiming that it violates his trademark:

Now, you might see some sort of claim over defamation (but, even that seems iffy, given that it's clearly a parody), but a trademark claim seems really iffy -- and not particularly smart. First, the site in question doesn't have any commerce. It does link to another site that sells stuff, which is how Beck tries to claim that it's a commercial site. For a trademark violation to occur, the name needs to be used in commerce. It's also supposed to be confusing -- but as plenty of "gripes sites" have shown, it's perfectly reasonable to use a trademarked term in a domain name (and, hell, Beck's name isn't even fully registered yet) as a part of a gripe/protest/parody, when it's clearly not run by the actual mark holder.

As for why it's not particularly smart -- whether he wins or loses -- is because he just called a whole bunch of attention to some silly internet meme that clearly wants attention. Beck would have been better off just ignoring it. Instead, in legitimizing it by trying to take it down, many more people become aware of the meme -- and may start calling attention to situations where Beck (and others) make use of such tactics.

    Last time I checked, the only persons attending his comedy tours were people who wanted to see him enough to pay for it. WTF is WRONG with you people? Never had a wife? Child? Glenn Beck makes a living doing exactly what this parody website does-just without the disclaimer that would indicate he is lying through his teeth. And honestly, as much as I appreciate a sensitive guy Glenn Beck is the biggest wussie I have ever seen, weeping and sniveling at the drop of a hat. I don't understand what all the "men's men" in the GOP see in him unless they see him as a softer alternative to we hard hearted feminists. Well, to each their own. He makes my skin crawl....ewwww.

        As Jon Stewart (EW LIBERAL!!) rephrased it, "I'm not saying your mother is a whore, I'm JUST ASKING. Reasonable people just want to know if YOUR MOTHER IS A WHORE." They (lots of these people, not just Beck) hide behind the question mark so they can say any crazy thing they want.
        
        Use your head. It's not about left vs. right or us vs. them, it's about thinking vs. idiocy. Pick which side you want to be on; if you want to be a thoughtful conservative, that's great. In that case you probably will want to have nothing to do with the likes of Glenn Beck. OTOH if you're picking the idiocy side... then I'm wasting my time.

I often wonder if the respected newsmen of 40+ years ago came back and saw how their modern counterparts have completely destroyed the idea of fair and balanced reporting for sensationalist garbage how their reaction would be.

I can't think of a single over-the-air or cable network that isn't leaning to the extreme left or right. Even WWW news sites are hard to pick through. Crazily enough, when it comes to general news Xinhua and Aljazeera have a more balanced editorial policy than most US/Western organizations. Thats pretty sad.

  Sitting here, a few miles away from the Edward R. Murrow School of Journalism, I could not agree more. I'm sure he's spinning in his grave. You make an important point - this isn't just about Glenn Beck, it's about the poor state of the "media".
  
  No longer do we have trusted voices, reporting just the facts and letting us come up with our own opinions. We have professional spinners, using tactics like those we're mocking, who influence the debate and public opinion far more than they should. And they pass it off as news. That's sad. We've become a nation of sheep, and it's a damn shame.
  
  While Glenn Beck may be the target of this, I hope it opens a few people's eyes. It's not just Beck, it's a whole lot of people in the media who employ these tactics. Beck is just an easy target, and one who's very fun to screw with.

    1st Glenn Beck is not a reporter, as he has pointed out MANY times he is a commentator and, has he has pointed out MANY times, he is biased towards conservatism.
    
    2nd, can you point to something Mr. Beck has said that was not factual? In the case of Van Jones for example, Mr. Beck let Mr. Jones' words speak for themselves. He played Mr. Jones' words in FULL CONTEXT. By revealing who Mr. Jones really is, Glenn Beck has done a great service to this country.

- he didn't deny it happened in 1991 or 1989;
- he didn't deny it was an older girl;

I love that he can't win for denying and he can't win for not denying. This is *so* Karl Rove.

  except that Karl Rove was never a news commentator. As a political strategist, he was expected to pull such maneuvers, and did so with willful gusto. No less offensive than many pulled by the machinators on the other side have done too often to count.
  
  I have to agree with the general jist of our topic at hand here- just not with comparing news commentators, anchors or any other "journalist" to a politico who was never one of those things and never represented himself as such. Karl would take your inuendo as a compliment, as do I as a supporter.

    of course, Olberman and Colbert don't get commented on by conservatives or any of their comments made a controversy of because of two factors:
    
    1) the media is overwhelmingly liberal socialists who are angry at people who have achieved anything for themselves beyond academics and other safe, liberal pursuits
    
    2) dumb conservatives get branded as the voice of conservatism, while the rest of the conservatives who really run things and are successful are too busy to triffle with such baseless non-sense. The world around us speaks different truths than the liberal bible. You're welcome to join when you're ready.

      I find that successful people in the US often claim 100% of their success as the result of their own doing, their own bootstraps, and thus 100% should be their own share of the rewards.
      
      I, too, am successful enough. But I am humble enough to know that my hard work, smarts, and career strategy were not enough. I needed the luck of good parents, the social service of good schools, the roads, the telecom infrastructure. I needed rule of law. I needed national defense. I needed reservoirs for freakin water to drink. I needed educated staff that I could hire to help my business progress. That shit doesn't grow on trees, though too many people ignore the role it played in their success.
      
      If success is 100% self-earned, then the successful might have achieved it anywhere. Good for them. I, for one, would not be as successful were I born in Botswana.

I find it odd that the title of this post is so misleading. After actually RTFA, it looks as though there is an issue with the title phrased "Glenn Beck Didn't Rape And Murder Anyone... But He Doesn't Want Websites Discussing It". From that title I would assume that he had sent C&D's to multiple sites or threatened action for carrying the story, but the reality is simply that he took action against a parody site that is actually teetering on defamation?

Some people actually need this technique of Beck's pointed out to them? That's the scariest thing of all. The asshat is all about that sort of nonsense. It's junior high stuff. "Well, see, he isn't denying it." It can be followed up with a question that can't be answered in any way without sounding wrong, like "when did you stop banging your sister?" You may laugh, but some of these commentators ask serious-sounding questions in that "gotcha" style, and no one seems to notice.

I did hear that rumor, and I checked the intertubes carefully. No where I checked did it say he most definately did not murder and rape a young girl in 1990. So it could have happened. I checked Fark, and Reddit, and links to other sites, and no where did it say where he said he had not murdered any young girl, or young boy for that matter.

We were down, and now we're back
Glenn's lawyers are trying DESPERATELY to get us shut down. He's sent notices to my webhost, their datacenter, now the registrar, who took us offline tonight (but we're back up).

Yes, GB1900.com is a backup domain that points to the site, so you can use it if you still can't get there...

I did update the verbiage on the main page today, to try and make it even more clear what this is all about - it's about fighting the techniques that people like Beck use - making vague accusations and trying to get people to deny the patently stupid.

My email and phone number are on the site. Feel free to let me know what you think, pro or con. I just want everyone to understand what we *are*, and *are not* doing. :-)

They do not report fair and balanced news, they do not check sources, they are the airwaves terrorist envoking hate and racism. We teach our childern team work, respect and tolerence, as adults what kind of example are we setting. This great nation came together and voted for change. The only "copyrighted material" that Beck claims in his complaint is being used without his permission is his name: "Glenn Beck," used in parody. If that's a copyright violation simply because it's a use of his name, then how many times per day does Beck violate other people's "copyrighted material" on his commercially-sponsored, money-making (for him) TV show? At least it used to be commercially sponsored. I understand that is drying up. Or maybe that's just a rumor. But why doesn't Beck deny it?

Not being familiar with Glenn Beck, let me see if I understand here.

This meme about Glenn Beck not denying a rape and murder is one of those "loaded questions", like "Have you stopped beating your wife?" It implies something that's not true, so Beck is understandably pissed off. This meme is a scummy attempt to discredit Beck.

However, the reason this meme came up in the first place, is because (I'm assuming from Masnick's post) Beck tends to use the same technique: stating rumors and demanding a response, and implying that the lack of response is acceptance of whatever wild rumor he chooses to put forth. Thus, this scummy meme is not a random attack, but poetic justice.

Is that about right?

If so, then I think Beck needs to stop eating kittens.

Glenn is one of the most honest and caring members of the media today. The left just doesn't like anyone reporting the truth, and will personally attack anyone who presents a threat to them.
This tactic referred to in this article is taken out of context. Beck often uses it, but in the context of humor to poke fun of illegitimate news sources such as MSNBC. The only show which continually employs these tactics is the daily show, which is obviously total parody, and not to be taken seriously.
Implying malicious acts such as rape and murder is treacherous whether it be parody or not.

  The rhetorical tactic Mr. Beck is being subjected to is crap. Yet, Mr. Beck uses this crap tactic and gets paid money for doing it on a national stage. Mr. Beck is just getting back what he's done to others, by someone on his own dime it seems, and showing he can't take it.

I'm not saying that Beck really did rape and murder this girl, but I find it puzzling that he's refused to deny the charges, and now I hear he's trying to have the website shut down. What is he trying to hide? If Beck would just release his records - including his appointment book, phone and credit card records, and DNA evidence - this whole thing would die as quickly as that young girl he might have murdered although we're not sure. But he's got to release the full, notarized originals, not a smudgy photocopy or a "short version." Beck's silence should be troubling to all patriotic Americans who love their country and fear for its future.

All glenn has to do is tell the truth. If he would just be a stand up guy and tell the truth things would work out. But he has yet to deny the charges. And he has not even given a good reason why. Why is he spending so much effort not denying these clear statements? All he has to do is prove it did not happen. But he will not, so the doubt and questions linger. We are all reasonable people and as reasonable people we should be able to expect some standard of proof from glenn that he did not do these things. But he has not been as forthcoming as we should have a right to expect.

I've watched both msnbc and fox. The difference in my opinion is that msnbc deals more with facts whereas fox it's almost all one sided. For example Chris Matthews always has someone on with an opposing view. Pat Buchanan who's as far right as you can go is frenquently his guest. He always has republicians on and for the most part shows respect. Rachael Maddow, like her or not she does her homework. She spoke about the republician who's speaking out about czars, this senator introduced a bill that would end the use of czars. She then showed a video of that same republician during the bush era talking about the NEED for czars - she then pointed out the senator's website that says he was one of the first senators to introduce the czar bill to congress. Those are FACTS and she calls them on it. Fox doesn't go by facts, unless you wants to call becks chalkboard with arrows and circle facts. On the rare occasion that they have someone with an opposing view, the person is usually interupted so many times that they never get to answer the question - o'reiley is notorous for it.

For those who seek to laugh from dark comedy, these sorts of topics would suit. For satire, as the type Moliere lived for, these topics would suit. For those of us who want news and information that is backed up by film, fact, recordable evidence, the type of data that can stand in a court, these topic are not worth our time, and frankly, does nothing to life a person up, only to tear down. I'm not into that. Life is hard enough to get through. People of all sides could target ANYONE and make an insinuation to put the person on the defensive. How can anyone categorically state that Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990? Unless a witness was with Glenn Beck during every second of 1990 someone stating that Glenn Beck didn't rape and murder anyone is entirely inconclusive. I think of, OJ, Robert Blake, Phil Specter, and I'm sure other famous people who have killed. A blanket statement of innocence is as crazy and a blanket statement of guilt.

"Didn't" is the wrong term.
Seeing as how an accusation has been made, and no proof to the contrary has been made, the correct headline should be "Genn Beck Probably didn't Rape and Murder a young girl in 1990"

If you follow Becks own logic, and use his GOP membership as a guide to his moral values and the values he places on the life and/or happiness of others it's very easy to believe that on occasion he might very well have raped and/or murdered or raped and murdered or murdered and raped some young woman in 1990. If he behaved as he does on TV and he was in a murder rape trial and I was on the jury he'd have a hard time winning me over.

So maybe you should think twice before proclaiming the innocence of someone based on information you just don't have.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I personally like Glenn Beck. I have found that the majority of the people who do not like Beck have never even watched his show and make their assumptions on him from what others have said. Alot of what he has said actually has happened even though people said he was crazy. I appreciate what he does. At least he has the balls to say what he actually believes.
