More efficient SSDs in 2012

Japanese researchers, led by Professor Tadahiro Kuroda, have developed a new technique to reduce the size of 1-terabyte solid state drives (SSDs) to make them close to the size of a US postage stamp. This technology also makes the chips cheaper to manufacture and increases the SSD’s energy efficiency by 70 percent. A prototype released recently consists of one controller chip and 128 NAND flash memory chips. The data transfer speed is 2 GB per second, and these SSDs will incorporate wireless communication standards that aim to help further lower its overall costs. They will be available commercially by 2012, but the retail price is still unknown.
