Obama Administration Warns Australia About Its Internet Censorship Plan
from the you-better-run,-you-better-take-cover dept
With the latest in a long line of attempts by the Australian gov't to censor the internet in a manner similar to China, it seems that its plans have finally caught the attention of the US government. The State Department has apparently raised concerns about the plan with the Australian government. The specifics of the comments to the Australian gov't were not made clear beyond "we have raised our concerns on this matter." Of course, those comments might carry a bit more weight if US politicians didn't keep suggesting similar (if not quite as stringent) plans in the US as well...Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It's Labour trying to keep the right wing nutters on side so they will approve legislation that Labour actually care about in the Senate.

'Senator Conroy also said he was unaware of complaints the Obama administration said it had raised with the government over the policy.' March 30, 2010 - 1:15PM (AEDST - GMT+11) Posted 1130pm (to avoid confuserificationisming people).
But yeah, the filter is sadly an attempt to get a few votes in parliament from some crazies who will likely want Darwsinism banning next.. sigh

- is this an April F00ls joke?
- the leaked list of banned sites did have a Queensland Dentist on it didn't it?
- in all seriousness, this move by the Labour Government had pushed alot of young, computer and internet savvy voters away from them.
