  No way would I suffer adverts in exchange for HiDef. Why? Because I won't suffer adverts for my precious little ones, and if I keep something for educational use, adverts are an unacceptable debasement. Fail. Epic Fail.

  The Digital Economy bill is stupid. It's so stupid that it is probably illegal... so we'll wait for the courts to throw it out, and for a change of government over it all. This will happen... if not now, then soon.

  Annoying, aren't you?
  Let's suppose I am in a foreign country, and want to watch some TV in English. Let's suppose the country has relatively slow Internet, so downloading a movie takes a few days. Let's suppose that I get homesick and want to hear my native language. Lets suppose there's a file sharing system that lets me download a movie. Then maybe I'd download it and watch it, hey?
  Now, let's suppose I have to buy it for $40 because that's the only option. I think I wouldn't buy it because it's a want, not a need. When I get home, I might buy it if I want something in decent quality with the subtitles and packing... if (and only if) it's really worth while... but it was on TV, so if it isn't worthwhile getting the DVD then I won't buy it.
  Now let's suppose there's some freakin' person who keeps saying "you have to buy it"... do you think I'd like them? You aren't making friends, here.

  Be it Steve Fielding's plan or Stephen Conroy's plan (since they both seem to support it)... it's a ridiculously stupid plan. Yes, it would even be possible to base the next election on it, as it is so incredibly controversial. Someone really should tell someone to drop it like a hot potato, before it causes any more damage. The question is: Who is going to yell loud enough that such a disengaged communications minister can hear?

  Did you need to add that? It's not incredibly useful, or even interesting.
  
  I find that if I become interested in a story, then I like to read the remainder of the story... and I prefer to read in dead-tree version, because it's truly portable - and it can sit on the shelf for reading in a few years when I need a refresh (or my child/grandchild wants to see the world that I saw). And maybe when an e-book reader comes out that is non-proprietary, very high resolution, and lasts weeks on a charge not days, I might buy one... or I might not.

  I get sick of people having something to say on every issue. All comments should be on-topic and not an argument over who says what to whom. It makes reading the comments very unproductive and downright annoying. Anonymous Coward take note.
  
  On patents, I think too many companies steal ideas from other companies. I also think that a few companies (particularly influential or larger companies) sue just because they have the money to win. That said, it IS for the courts to decide, and I hope they DO get to decide, because small people often cave in due to the cost and the hassle, which means the big companies are being counter-competitive (a good thing for them, and a bad thing for the rest of us).
