DailyDirt: Getting Some Shuteye...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Sleep is a vital bodily function -- even if no one knows exactly why we do it. There's a lot of sleep research, but not a lot of solid answers for the origins of sleep. But that doesn't mean we're not learning cool stuff about sleeping all the time. Here are just a few tidbits of research on the topic of sleeping. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I certainly am never going to wear lucid dreaming headgear as a replacement for shows and games unless I can alt-tab out of it as needed. It's not like it would make the experience more immersive anyway; people have been using the power of imagination to totally immerse themselves in the worlds of others for centuries.

The few times I've managed to have lucid dreams, by realizing that I'm dreaming, I invariably wake up a few seconds later. Realizing that I'm dreaming seems to be an almost instant kill-switch for my dreams.

How do all these people take naps during the day? Perhaps if they had a job, they could afford better medical care and live longer.
