DailyDirt: Prestigious Prizes

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

The Olympic games publicize the physical achievements of athletes, but what about the notable achievements of scientists? It's somewhat hard to cheer for individuals working on fundamental research, but sometimes scientists get some well-deserved recognition. There are other prizes besides the Nobel, and here are just a few international awards for smart folks working on scientific endeavors. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    more billionaires should do this...

is there a tax incentive for billionaires (or multi-millionaires) to fund these kind of foundations for scientific progress...? there should be.

There are other prizes besides the Nobel,

There are,, but clearly, by the way you are comparing all other awards with the Nobel prize, it is clear you believe that the nobel is the only one that matters..

every university has their own set of awards, as does much of industry.....

    Nice to see

It is really nice to see awards that celebrate intellectual achievements instead of physical ability. We need more awards like this to inspire young people to truly develop their ability to think.
