DailyDirt: Lasers, Not Attached To Shark Heads...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

The first laser was made in 1960, and since then, lasers have become increasingly useful -- by delivering information through fiber optic cables and in LASIK and other ablative cutting processes. What would we do without lasers? It's possible that lasers could solve all of our energy needs if inertial confinement fusion ever pans out. We're still discovering cool things to do with lasers, so check out a few of these links on coherent light sources. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Laser weapons will have a disadvantaged against traditional heavy metal weapons for a very long time, simply because there is always the problem with providing them with power, and the fact that they need to be 'attached' to the area of operation. The failure of the airborne lasers in the Star Wars program was an obvious sign of just how precarious sci-fi tech really is.

Sure, lets weaponize everything because that worked so perfectly in the past.
Cool and awesome approach to life.
Sidenote: every weapon-like thing in these articles are used as a defense against American weapons. Just something to think about...

So, I guess the "Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range" isn't exactly around the corner? :D

    Cost-effective

"and may be more cost effective than using conventional missiles"

Which is a very good reason to oppose this technology.
