DailyDirt: Hamburgers Gone Wild

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

The Library of Congress names Louis' Lunch sandwich shop as the inventor of the hamburger, but there are various disputes over who exactly cooked the first hamburger (and named it after people from Germany). In any case, the hamburger has undergone quite a few changes since the early 1900s. Here are a couple unhealthy examples of extreme burgers, and a reminder that being overweight doesn't necessarily kill you (but it's not considered healthy). If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The 'Merica burger is made of ground bacon topped with more bacon...

    Damn, now I'm hungry again!

Be careful about what you dismiss as unhealthy. I am on the Ketogenic diet ("keto") and the 'Merica burger would be ok on this diet, with the exception of the dressing which probably has too many carbs. Yes, it really is a weight loss diet and it really works. I have lost 50 pounds in less than 3 months by eating no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. I just had a rather complete set of blood tests and they are much better than before I started the diet. I feel better than I have in years and have no trouble staying on a diet of mostly meat and fat. Be careful about what you denounce as unhealthy.

A recent study of people over 50 determined that the more saturated fat the eat, the less likely they were to suffer from heart attacks or stroke. The 'Merican burger is health food.

BMI >30 associated with longer life

Actually that study was found to be faulty. The results have since been discounted, and the study can be ignored.

You can prove any point you want with a study or poll.

    Of course

... It must me measurement error if findings do not meet our expectations! Had the findings been the opposite there would be no question about the BMI measurement tool.. Welcome to the wonderfully biased world of science.

BMI is a useless tool. So isn't percentage fat. The only fat that is associated with serious health risks is abdomen fat, which neither BMI or percentage body fat measure.
