DailyDirt: Jellyfish As Pets?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

If you're not a dog or cat person, maybe you prefer fish or some other pet that doesn't require too much attention. If vertebrates -- or even invertebrates -- are too evolved for your liking, some folks have come up with a few jellyfish aquariums that might suit your tastes. You still need to take care of these creatures, and they're not immortal (unless your name is Shin Kubota), unfortunately. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Darwin tank

"And in case you were wondering, the tank's name doesn't mean that you're trying to pit your pet jellies against each other"

I was thinking it was a tank you climb in with the jellies and try to win an award.

This write-up got me thinking about how jellyfish should probably be genocided for their incidental anti-environmentalism. ... well, to be honest, that's just a cover... I actually hate them because my dad peed on my leg. ...... I don't like to talk about it.

Anyway, I googled "Jellyfish genocide" on a lark, and sure enough, there're already Jellyfish genocide robot deployed in the ocean: http://www.popsci.com/article/science/jellyfish-terminator-robots-suck-2000-pounds-jellies-hour

Fish tanks always seemed kind of cruel to me, especially the ones shown in the links to this article. They're a (relatively) small enclosed space with not much for the fish to see or do. Within the first hour, the fish will have explored every inch of the tank, then it's just swimming around the same environment for the rest of their lives. The tanks in the links are even worse as they have nothing in them to provide any variety.

Even larger tanks with fake plants and decorations don't take very long for a fish to explore.

Imagine spending the rest of your life locked in a featureless room where someone shoves food under the door once a day. You have a window to look out of, but nothing to do. Nothing to investigate, nowhere new to go, just an empty room. Even if there were a few pieces of art and some fake plants to brighten up the room, you'd still be bored out of your mind pretty quickly.

    Jellyfish Tank Aquarium

It is true that I'll hate to find some jellyfishes swimming along with me. It will make me afraid of being stung by those awful tentacles. But I must admit that keeping some alive jellyfishes in home is cool idea. How difficult it is to maintain that jelly tanks ?
