DailyDirt: Learning In Your Sleep

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

We spend almost a third of our lives sleeping, so some people would like to make (better?) use of the time we supposedly waste lying in bed each night. People have tried learning foreign languages on tape while asleep. People want to train themselves to quit smoking while they snore away. The list of things people might want to try to learn unconsciously is endless -- because it seems like an effortless way to try to train our brains. Here are just a few links on the topic of sleep learning and some successful examples of it. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Sleeping is for resting your brain -- not filling it up with even more useless stuff.

"A recent sleep learning study shows that it's possible to modify a person's behavior while awake by training them while they're asleep. Sleeping subjects were presented with certain (pleasant or offensive) odors and audible tones at the same time, and when they were awake, playing the tones altered the trained person's sniffing and breathing behavior -- eg. people exposed to unpleasant odors would take shallow breaths after hearing the tones."

"They say that when you go into cryo sleep, everything shuts down in your brain except the primitive animal side..huh, no wonder I'm still awake."

The relationship between sleep, learning and memory formation is a fascinating field -- one that is getting some Department of Defense funding, unsurprisingly.

Making killing machines is important. And now they need to disregard the Constitution as well. Tough job.

    Thought during sleep

This is hardly surprising to me. While in graduate school in mathematics, I had the experience of going to sleep not having any idea of how to do an exercise (from Atiyah and Macdonald's little book on commutative algebra) and waking up with a complete solution.
