DailyDirt: More Tall Buildings

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

The prestige of owning huge construction projects has existed for a long time. The Great Wall, the Egyptian pyramids, Stonehenge... However, modern architecture doesn't seem quite as remarkable (since there's no big secret to how the work is done). Still, the race for creating the tallest building in the world is on-going. Here are a few quick links about building the next enormous skyscrapers. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wow

"The annual Skyscraper Competition from eVolo named some winners for 2011. The first place winner is a giant turbine that could help clean up polluted air above New Delhi."

Who knew, sticking a giant fan on a tall building really does clean air? And teachers laughed at me in school for the same idea back in 3rd grade

These are just drawings on a piece of paper. So far removed from reality that saying this thing cleans the air is about as correct as saying Rosie O'Donnell is attractive.
In the wild world where such a large structure was able to "clean" the air, the pollution created while constructing it would more than cancel out any benefits.

Could this be compensation for something else that is a bit small?

    How tall?

I don't know what happened there, but your article says it's 1.6 km tall, with the 1.6 struck through, then a greater-than-or-equal sign, then 1.0. It makes it look like it originally said 1.6 and then changed to 1.0, but the linked article says 1.6 km. You might want to update (fix) that for clarity.
