WWE Raw SuperShow One Wrestler Short Due To SOPA Support

from the coming-back-to-bite-you dept

Via Wrestling Inc, we learn that wrestler Val Venis will not be appearing in upcoming Raw SuperShow events due to the WWE's past support of SOPA and CISPA. According to a recent tweet, Val told one fan, "#WWE asked me to appear but I just cannot do anything with them for as long as they continue their support of #SOAP/#CISPA". While the WWE was never listed on the official Judiciary Committee list of supporters, the organization made many community sourced lists as a supporter of SOPA. Regardless of when and how the WWE came to be supportive of the unpopular bills, this shows that there is a long lasting bitter aftertaste left in the mouths of those who feel betrayed by organizations that supported SOPA and CISPA.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I think Val needs to be more proactive and start a "Body Slam SOPA" campaign.

Also, Zach...you got a minor spelling error with SOAP instead of SOPA.

Is anyone else noticing a growing corporate interest in our law making against public interest our is it just me? WWE won't talk about SOPA even though they support it. The CoC tried everything to get it passed. And we can't forget that Lamar along with the USTR pushing against what people want.

This is beginning to remind me of the fights that Jefferson and our Forefathers had against corporate interests...

If this corner we have the tag-team of SOPA and CISPA. In the other corner we have Net Neutrality and the General Public. FIGHT!

    Re:

History goes in cycles. What seems like a good idea has faults, those faults are found and fought against, overfixed, and then the next generation sees the faults of the fixes and overfixes, etc.

Ideally we move toward balance. In reality, sometimes we just see-saw.

Yeesh. Having this guy on your team might not be all that great. I admire his stance but his wrestling persona is pretty distasteful.

    If they are an example....

....of a supporter of draconian copyright laws....well it explains a lot of things.

Seriously, I've never seen a sillier, more pointless, more rediculous entertainment venue than this wrestling corporation, whatever their current acronym. No respect meant to those who DO find this show enjoyable. If you like it, I'm happy you found something to watch. I worked as a stagehand on some of their shows. I watched as the mortal enemies swapped jokes and hung out together. I saw the critically wounded "warriors" hobble and crawl out of camera range and resume their normal gait. I watched them rehearse their "spontaneous" gags. Best of all, at the height of the security scare following 9/11, we stagehands were told we had to stay at least 20 feet from the "stars" if we wanted to work the show. Did they fear that a stagehand would blow up a wrestler as a political statement? And yet these characters support even more laws to protect 350 pound guys from deadly wimps like me and you. Gotta protect the "artists" after all.

I'm glad at least one of the performers stood up and repudiated the owners of this sham organisation. Not that it will do any good.

But if I never see another westling show I suppose I'll deal with it.And considering the cost of viewing one, I guess I never will.

    "growing corporate interest "

It's been happening for decades. Only since the rise of the internet and the resulting free speech/corrections of misinformation have they been so blatant about it...

Val Venis (rhymes with...) was a porn star gimmick used by Sean Morley.

Sean Morley is a libertarian and a good guy in general.

I wonder what current WWE superstar and libertarian Kane thinks about this.

This morning, the long-awaited WWE Network launched, bringing with it 24/7 live programming alongside an extensive content library from WWE. "http://www.worldtvzone.in/">WWE Survivor SeriesAs is to be expected with any new, big content offering, there are some hiccups due to the rush of demand that the servers are having to deal with.
