Research Libraries Tell Publishers To Drop Their Awful Lawsuit Against The Internet Archive

from the speak-up dept

I've seen a lot of people -- including those who are supporting the publishers' legal attack on the Internet Archive -- insist that they "support libraries," but that the Internet Archive's Open Library and National Emergency Library are "not libraries." First off, they're wrong. But, more importantly, it's good to see actual librarians now coming out in support of the Internet Archive as well. The Association of Research Libraries has put out a statement asking publishers to drop this counter productive lawsuit, especially since the Internet Archive has shut down the National Emergency Library.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) urges an end to the lawsuit against the Internet Archive filed early this month by four major publishers in the United States District Court Southern District of New York, especially now that the National Emergency Library (NEL) has closed two weeks earlier than originally planned.

As the ARL points out, the Internet Archive has been an astounding "force for good" for the dissemination of knowledge and culture -- and that includes introducing people to more books.

For nearly 25 years, the Internet Archive (IA) has been a force for good by capturing the world’s knowledge and providing barrier-free access for everyone, contributing services to higher education and the public, including the Wayback Machine that archives the World Wide Web, as well as a host of other services preserving software, audio files, special collections, and more. Over the past four weeks, IA’s Open Library has circulated more than 400,000 digital books without any user cost—including out-of-copyright works, university press titles, and recent works of academic interest—using controlled digital lending (CDL). CDL is a practice whereby libraries lend temporary digital copies of print books they own in a one-to-one ratio of “loaned to owned,” and where the print copy is removed from circulation while the digital copy is in use. CDL is a practice rooted in the fair use right of the US Copyright Act and recent judicial interpretations of that right. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many academic and research libraries have relied on CDL (including IA’s Open Library) to ensure academic and research continuity at a time when many physical collections have been inaccessible.

As ARL and our partner library associations acknowledge, many publishers (including some involved in the lawsuit) are contributing to academic continuity by opening more content during this crisis. As universities and libraries work to ensure scholars and students have the information they need, ARL looks forward to working with publishers to ensure open and equitable access to information. Continuing the litigation against IA for the purpose of recovering statutory damages and shuttering the Open Library would interfere with this shared mutual objective.

It would be nice if the publishers recognized this, but as we've said over and over again, these publishers would sue any library if libraries didn't already exist. The fact that the Open Library looks just marginally different from a traditional library, means they're unlikely to let go of this stupid, counterproductive lawsuit.

    That's Amazing!

The anti-malaria drug that President Trump touted as a possible treatment for coronavirus, hydroxychloroquine, successfully lowered the death rate among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the most recent study of the drug.

The large-scale analysis, conducted by Henry Ford Health System, was published Thursday in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The study examined 2,541 patients who had been hospitalized in six hospitals between March 10 and May 2, 2020.

More than twenty-six percent (26.4%) of patients who did not receive hydroxychloroquine died.

But among those who received hydroxychloroquine, fewer than half that number — 13% — died.

Techdirt helped KILL people with Covid-19!

More than 90% of the patients received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission to the hospital. Scientists say giving the drug early during illness may be a key to success.

The study’s authors also found one concern flagged in previous reports about hydroxychloroquine did not materialize: heart-related adverse events.

"The data here is clear that there was benefit to using [hydroxychloroquine] as a treatment for sick, hospitalized patients," said Dr. Steven Kalkanis of Henry Ford Health System.

The study scientists point out that other reports about hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus that had less positive, mixed, or negative results studied different populations; administered hydroxychloroquine later during illness; used different doses, and/or were not peer-reviewed.

President Trump was widely criticized in the media for saying that if hydroxychloroquine proves to work in treating coronavirus, it could be a game changer.

In May, he told reporters that he, himself, took a course of the drug as a preventive measure after several White House officials were diaagnosed with Covid-19. Trump says he suffered no ill effects from hydroxychloroquine.

Henry Ford Health System is also studying 3,000 healthcare and frontline workers to see if hydroxychloroquine can prevent coronavirus. That study is titled: "Will Hydroxychloroquine Impede or Prevent COVID-19" or "WHIP COVID-19."

However, the study scientists say negative publicity and safety concerns about hydroxychloroquine — some of which they say is inaccurate or out of context — has made it difficult to recruit enough volunteers to take part.

Techdirt was part of that disgusting and totally wrong negative publicity - do you want to publicly apologize for you stupidity?

Trump supporters have protested against wearing face masks in public. “Be[ing] calm and rational” won’t help a goddamn thing in a country where a good chunk of people take pride in their irrationality — to the detriment of everyone else.

Re: Techdirt helped KILL people with Covid-19!

"Techdirt was part of that disgusting and totally wrong negative publicity - do you want to publicly apologize for you stupidity?"

No. Criticism of Trump for claiming that it was some kind of wonder drug that will cure COVID patients and pushing it against then-current medical advice does not change just because some trials after the fact finds that it has some efficiency (though not the miracle cure he was claiming).

But, that is irrelevant now anyway, since the incompetence of this administration knows no bounds. Trump has managed to both encourage states to open their economies up way before they were ready, and has politicised the wearing of masks to such a degree that people are being attacked for either wearing one or telling customers to wear one. The result of this and other factors - the US is heading on a massive rise in infection that is going to cause a lot more Americans to die.

As of yesterday as I write this - the US has 57,238 new cases - a daily record - and shows signs of accelerating. Several states have already started locking back down and are reporting facilities already over capacity. People will die, and the snake oil your con man in chief was trying to sell won't save you, even if it turns out it wasn't just snake oil.

For contrast, life here where I live is pretty good, and mostly back to normal. Low daily cases, no spikes during carefully phased reopening, travel has opened up to a large chunk of the world (though we ban the plague rats from the US) and because people don't argue with common sense things like insisting on some social distancing where possible and wearing masks where it is not, it should be a good summer.

Even if the "snake oil" is not "snake oil"? Is that a reasonable summary of your position? You wouldn't take it because the it was "over-rated" by the Orange Monster?

Here's a simple question - if you had Covid-19, based on this recent study, would you choose to take it or not?

Either it is snake oil, or it is life saving medical treatment. Can't be both. Right?

"Here's a simple question - if you had Covid-19, based on this recent study, would you choose to take it or not?"

I would do whatever a doctor - not a multi-time bankrupt con artist who couldn't even run a casino profitably - advised me to do.

"Either it is snake oil, or it is life saving medical treatment. Can't be both. Right?"

Of course it can. If the claims made during the sale do not match the actual effect of the drug, you're selling it as snake oil, even if it does have some actual medicinal effects. Alex Jones, until he was recently told to stop lying by the FDA, was selling his supplements as cures for COVID. They absolutely were not that, but their combination of vitamins and minerals did have some real benefits. So, it was snake oil when compared to his claims, but not when compared to their actual properties.

Not really. Having a family that contributes to the world in a meaningful way is. I doubt that someone with the lack of knowledge and maturity that you display has done such a thing. You're probably just another breeding redneck who whines about socialism while leeching for the government for the spawn he can't afford to pay for on his own.

"Either it is snake oil, or it is life saving medical treatment. Can't be both. Right?"

It certainly can and by now I really shouldn't be surprised that the average pro-trump troll keeps failing to reach the cognitive standards of five year olds.

See, Chloroquine is toxic. The side effects can be lethal.

In other words, self-medicating on chloroquine is likely more lethal than having Covid. And THAT is why the moron-in-chief's suggestion of chloroquine being a miracle cure is as deranged an argument as advocating self-medicated chemotherapy and radiation as a cure for cancer.

Add as icing to the cake on this that in some cases chloroquine may have helped and in other cases not and what you have is the drug version of russian roulette where, unless you're really up shit creek, you wouldn't want to take chloroquine in the dosages assumed to be required without a whole team of expert surgeons standing by to tackle the side effects.

And that's also why the loud orange in the white house is taking dosages of chloroquine WAY smaller than the dosages used in the emergency tests displaying positive results.

I almost wish he didn't. Having him drop to the floor from intermittent extreme tachycardia, having seizures and/or vomit uncontrollable in front of the camera as a direct result of ingesting emergency dosages of chloroquine might help to show the Cult Of Trump their Great Fearless Leader was talking out of his ass again.

Then again it might not. With numerous actual deaths and hospitalizations from demented trumpers drinking chloroquine and chlorox as suggested by the orange combover clown it's pretty telling the Trump Death Cult is still ready to take their dedication to their leader all the way.

I see. Here's what I think about what you wrote:

                1) it is dense and complicated enough that it requires some level of cognitive ability - maybe high school level, but not advanced placement high school level.

                2) For those at high school level or higher, they can see right through your stupid arguments. Yes, taking any drug in the wrong dosage can be lethal. Drinking too much water can be lethal. Any idiot knows that. Current published and peer reviewed reports conclude without exception that this drug is a very effective treatment for the virus, and has saved many lives. Saved Lives. Get that? In short, Trump was right. Again.

So, the only people swayed by your diatribe are those idiots that didn't even follow it. Is that the class of people you were hoping to persuade? Early teens? Impressionable young minds?

Wait, are you an elementary or junior high school teacher? That could explain a lot. I've heard about people like you and your ideals. Are you a gay or lesbian elementary or junior high school teacher? That would explain even more.

That's the problem here. There are known side-effects of the drug, those side effects can in some cases be riskier than not treating, and encouraging hoarding will remove access to the drug from people who need it for non-COVID related conditions. The above study is one of many, and there are different results being reported, but the fact is that any recommendation is bad if it's made before supporting medical evidence is available,

A sane, intelligent person would know this and not make any recommendations until it's actually been . Sadly, Trump is not one of those people. Even if he's vindicated 100% by medical evidence months later, it was highly irresponsible for him to make those pronouncements before the evidence was confirmed.

"Are you a gay or lesbian elementary or junior high school teacher? That would explain even more."

It mainly explains that you're a bigoted asshole who has a weird obsession with sexuality in places where it's irrelevant. Maybe you're compensating for something?

So? Has it been falsified or the conclusions disproven? Science doesn't care how new your study is, it cares about accuracy.

                        " My study is new."

Meaning that it hasn't had a chance to be falsified or peer reviewed properly yet?

"My study specifically notes an absence of adverse side effects."

...and if you believe a single study because it tells you what you want to hear, rather than taking the broader consensus of the medical community, you're as dumb as Trump and don't belong anywhere near a discussion on science.

"Current published and peer reviewed reports conclude without exception that this drug is a very effective treatment for the virus..."

Nope. In fact that's exactly what published data isn't claiming.

"Yes, taking any drug in the wrong dosage can be lethal."

...and the dosages used in the testing ARE in fact borderline lethal, at multiple times the amount where the warning labels start screaming at you.

"I've heard about people like you and your ideals. Are you a gay or lesbian...Or maybe are you a failed lawyer..."

Wrong on all counts - but thank you again for confirming that the most fanatic Trump cultists are rooted in bigotry and bad education first and foremost. Also thank you for showing that of all things a teacher seems to be the last person you'd go to as an information source.

The only problem I'm left with right now is that whether you are a bona fide trumpist or some troll pretending to be one in order to make the trump cult look bad you still aren't contributing anything at all to the debate since Trump keeps kicking his own arguments in the balls without any assistance. That you do the same won't add much.

Given that your posts only ever end up flagged and hidden as spam you certainly ARE starved for things to do.

              Silicon Valley is against us.

If anything, Silicon Valley has bent over backwards to accomodate conservative voices. Look to how long it took Twitter, Facebook, etc. to do something about Alex Jones’s bullshit on their services or labelling Trump’s obvious lies as lies.

              The Swamp is against us.

Donald Trump has been in office for over three years. If “the swamp” still exists, he has filled it with his people instead of…whoever was supposed to be in it before he “drained” it, I guess. Nobody can use “the swamp” as an excuse; at this point, the QAnon conspiracy theory has the tiniest bit more credibility than “the swamp is holding Trump back”.

The Radical Left & Antifa (one in the same) are against us.

Yes, I imagine the “radical left” would be against conservative policies. Yes, I imagine anti-fascists would be against fascist policies. And yes, conservative policies under Trump have begun to resemble fascist policies. But the United States doesn’t have either an organized “radical left” or an organized national anti-fascist group/movement. Anyone proclaiming them as “enemies” reeks of baseless fearmongering for the sake of scoring political points.

Hell, Congress barely has any actual leftists in it. The overwhelming majority of congressional Democrats are either centrists or right of center. How many of them are pushing for any policy that is actually leftist (e.g., Medicare For All) instead of merely “something that Republicans don’t like”?

"400,000 people on the African continent die of malaria EVERY YEAR, and hydroxychloroquine is their only defense. AMERKA 1st!"

Which, indeed, is one of the reasons why people were advising against the drug, as well as things like N95 masks. Hoarding from greedy assholes triggered by irresponsible leadership will cause shortages for people who already need them for non-COVID reasons.

A real leader understands this, and doesn't make announcements until the clinical trials for COVID efficiency are complete, and/or there's enough supply to guarantee every gets what they need (which, by the way, includes treatment for things like lupus in the US, so it's not just overseas requirements being screwed).

Sadly, there's no real leader in the White House, and an idiot who still thinks in terms of grifting and ratings.

Well, sort of, excepting all the tons of N95 masks we air-shipped to China for profit while SARS-CoV2 was already becoming a crisis in the States. It was not merely OK'd, but encouraged.

It's fine to share, but this wasn't sharing, and certainly other places could have used masks, as well as the States.

The figures as I check them this morning - still over 50,000 new infections reported a day. Being a lagging indicator, deaths haven't started spiking significantly yet, but with reports of how badly over capacity some hospitals are in the US, that spike should be coming soon.

...and of course that's just official figures. Some states are still trying to claim low COVID deaths while waving away the large rise in pneumonia deaths that just happen to be occurring at the same time.

The question is, does he hide enough to get re-elected, or does the next administration have competent leadership? Sadly, my guess is that it will still be a close race even after all of this, and if Biden gets in he'll be blamed for everything Trump did wrong, as they blamed Obama for W.'s failed economy.

Yeah, quinine is an anti-malarial. Means it helps against the malaria parasite. Do we really need to inform you trumpers that a drug which works against one thing usually doesn't work against another?

Boosting the dosages to many multiple times what is required to mitigate malaria has managed to...not actually kill covid patients in many cases, yes. Which is a good thing since chloroquine in those concentrations is so damn dangerous in its side effects.

No, that's not it. It's a sign of trust. Trump, unlike the leftist media, unlike Techdirt, did not mislead us. Time and again, he was right about Nafta, he was right about China, he was right about the Wall, he was right about de-regulation and the benefits to America, and he was right about this drug and the benefits to Covid-19 victims. He was right. Again and again, over and over on and on forever. This recent study is just one more example, explained in detail, verified by health professionals, and with indisputable results. He'll be right again next time, and if he's not, so what, who's perfect? He's batting 1000 so far. This is just one more example in a long chain of examples why so many of us will elect him again. 2,890,588
            Deaths:
            132,101

            These numbers are accelerating.

            https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52757150

Earlier coronavirus lockdown 'could have saved 36,000 lives'

"It suggested that 54,000 fewer people would have died had cities begun locking down on 1 March."

Trump's words on the 9th March, over a week after incompetently missing that opportunity:

“So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!” — Trump in a tweet.

That's worth repeating. Even if China was the origin of cases coming into the US, he was doing too little, too late. But, the racist moron was obsessed with blaming China for everything (when he wasn't claiming it was all a hoax, anyway), even as the majority of cases coming into New York were actually originating in Italy. IIRC, he was also trying to block travel from Mexico, despite them having lower numbers of cases than the US, because he saw it as a way to implement the racist policies he was already attempting, not actually address the issue at hand.

Yeah, the cases came from Italy, everyone knows that! Italy is not China, and China is not Italy, racist! And why block travel from Mexico, they had lower numbers than the US! That's right! Mexico was low, Italy was High, and China had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! Why do you keep promoting the fake news about China when EVERYONE KNOWS Italy Invented the Virus! You are CORRUPT! You are White and you are OLD and you are RICH and we want to emulate the Chinese who are Yellow and Slanty Eyed and mostly POOR and had NOTHING TO DO with INFECTING THE WORLD with Covid-19! Nothing! These are the alternative facts which are better than, you know, the ones the leftists want to use all the time.

Except that factually speraking, no, he was wrong in all of those examples you mentioned.

China? Now have the exact trade treaty they wanted since, no surprise there, the "trade war" took exactly two weeks to screw the US far worse than it did China. You are bragging on Trump's behalf because he managed to negotiate a deal far shittier for the US than what was already in place. Xi Jin Ping is probably on his knees thanking heaven for putting him up against a complete idiot too out of his depth to notice.

The Wall? You mean that partial fence which doesn't, in fact, stop anyone with a ladder, a rope, or the dozens of tunnels the mexican cartels keep building? Yeah, Trump spent billions of your tax money on a ceremonial picket fence. Way to go.

De-regulation? You mean the part where in the last few years monopoly has become the norm of the US telco industry to the obvious detriment of US telco infrastructure? Unless you're owning stock in AT&T that's not a "win".

"...and he was right about this drug..."

Except he wasn't. Because if there was even a smidgeon of truth in what he keeps claiming chloroquine would have become the standard treatment in the rest of the world by now. You trump cultists are actually at the point now where you need the whole world to be in on a global conspiracy where they let their citizens die én másse simply to...spite Trump?

            "He's batting 1000 so far."

Oh, lay off it. We all know exactly why you fanatical trump adherents are so happy with him. It's because he's that one president in modern times who cheerfully refers to neo-nazis as "Very Fine People". He's consistently just that small step short of referring to black people as n_ggers. THAT is why you love him and keep trying to make him out to be right even when even you guys can plainly see he's not.

And Baghdad Bob? It's not like we don't all know this by now. Your tells, as usual, are as obvious as they always are when you try to wrap your diatribe of hatred in a marginally less offensive shit sandwich.

I'd say you'd do better to just accept that the black man might indeed end up having the same value as a white man in the US, and learn to live with that - but I have little hope by now you'd prove to be that human.

It certainly does. But it's to be expected. A certain subset of the US citizenry feels sidelined and ostracized by just about everyone. It's as if there's a leftist global conspiracy targeting them with marginalization and scorn in all places and at all levels as soon as they start talking about the evils of the Black Man or the Proper Place For The Woman.

Naturally if the one and only places you can find likeminded people who don't shut you down is a Stormfront forum or the local KKK cross-burning convention everyone outside, including naturally school teachers trying to teach you decency and science are going to be the vanguard of the shadowy cabal set against you.

Not too difficult to understand why these people cling to Trump. He's their kind of people - only that he was born into fortune and managed to bullshit enough people to keep making money, through cheap scam and standard con man tactics.

To him of course, they're just more marks.

Grabbing a library before they burn Alexandria

sci-hub has been good to me

My only problem is that Microsoft keeps building MORE clicks and more obstacles into using 'WordPad' and 'Paint', almost every 'search' of my desktop takes forever, (Corina is horridly difficult thing to turn off, if it is possible) and, because Microsoft posts my new files on their 'cloud' (i think) before indexing them, they are unavailable in local search for many minutes, in spite of this nine year old hard drive being less than half full:(
This POS "10" is slower than MS-DOS cause Microsoft is deep in my pants.

      https://www.getgnulinux.org/en/switch_to_linux/from_windows_to_linux

Indexing can be quite taxing on a 9 years old hard drive. Some distributions have more flexible search indexing options than others.

Install Ubuntu, or one of its derivatives, or any other user orientated distro, and in and in less than 1 hour you have a working system complete with office applications, media player etc. Want more application, and there they are in an app store for you to install then from, and not one glimpse of the command line.

Also, I have a main machine running Debian testing, with updates most days, and not had any significant problems with it over the last six or seven years.

CSB: I recently had a need to scan some documents, but having recently moved from working in fully equipped offices to 100% remote work, the only scanner I have is one that's over 10 years old. I tried it with my main MacOS Catalina system, only to find that support for the drivers was removed when they went full 64 bit and there's no downloadable replacement. I'm fixing a Windows 10 laptop for someone, so I tried with that, same issue - drivers no longer supported. So, what do I do - install a VM with an older OS and hope that works, do I go and hunt down a friend whose scanner I can use, or do I bite the bullet and spend money I haven't earned yet on a new scanner that I might not need again for another year?

Nope, I also had an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS stick lying around. Boot from that on my Mac, boom, scanner immediately fires up and I get the documents sent. No installation or command prompt needed. While the other OSes have simply stopped supporting my scanner due to long-term infrastructure changes, it seems that Ubuntu never stopped.

giants FOREVER memorialized in the stone of Mt Rushmore

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

    "CDL" is DRM

CDL is a practice whereby libraries lend temporary digital copies of print books they own in a one-to-one ratio of “loaned to owned,” and where the print copy is removed from circulation while the digital copy is in use. CDL is a practice rooted in the fair use right

That's exactly DRM, and libraries shouldn't be so eager to enshrine it in law. There's nothing "open" or "equitable" about it.

How the fuck does that work when Biden hasn’t called for the outlawing of jobs (who would?!), a national lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19 sounds more and more like a good idea, MS-13 is barely even a presence even within the United States (an estimated 10,000 people, or less than 1% of the total number of known gang members in the country), and the police have consistently turned numerous peaceful protests into scenes of violence drenched in tear gas and pepper spray?

What really gets to me is that the libraries must have an online presence during a pandemic, because it isn't safe for anyone to actually visit libraries. The books aren't going to be of any use to people, if they're locked up and these publishers have made it abundantly clear they don't care about availability.

Gavin Newsom is rich. He can pay to go to a resort when the beach is closed.

But for many Californians, the public beach is the free place to go. Closing public beaches in SoCal is an attack on the working class.

Closing public beaches to prevent the spread of a disease during a global pandemic is sound thinking. Forcing the working class to work during a global pandemic for the sake of earning enough money to stay alive is an attack on the working class. And last I checked, I haven’t seen anyone who could do so willing to implement Universal Basic Income into law.

Two more popular business GONE because of Techdirt!

Owners said the bars would only reopen if city leaders enact a plan that “curbs the violence happening in the streets" and "cleans up the comment section of Techdirt" with "less censorship."

The announcement came less than a week after one person was killed and another 11 were injured in a shooting that took place near Cowboy Slim’s, and only a day since many patriotic Americans posting on Techdirt were silenced, without explanation, warning or even a little apology.

Bar owners said they reached out to city leaders — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is a Democrat, and 12 of the city council’s 13 members are Democrats — after the incident to hear how they planned to curb the violence and clean up Techdirt.

However, the city had no plan, the owners said, instead advising the business to “educate patrons and staff on the lack of safety provided and the dangers that lie outside the doors, especially on leftie sites like Techdirt,” KMSP-TV reported.

Come now, Stephen, be fair. To the Very Fine People of the KKK and the neo-nazis the world does indeed look like an organized movement out to get them. Can't blame them for assuming everyone's against them. We sort of are, since just about everyone I know thinks fascism and racism are bad things.

'If we can't kill it then we can at least cripple it.'

While the publishers with more greed than sense were too late to kill off libraries entirely(something which I'm sure is a source of great annoyance to them) they are certainly doing their hardest to make sure that libraries stay as old fashioned as possible, preventing them from implementing more modern changes to better serve the public.

Re: 'If we can't kill it then we can at least cripple it.'

One thing I have come to like about Techdirt is how it presents such a sharp contrast to real life. For example, you speak about publishers with "more greed", which sounds similar to Obama talking about "greed". I never understood that before, but reading Techdirt, I'm starting to. When you see that Obama lives in multiple multi-million dollar mansions, and vacations on super-yachts, you don't see greed, but when you see a small entrepreneur trying to offer a product or service for a fee, you do see greed. That's so interesting. When you see all the conservative voices silenced (above), you see reasonable moderation and not political bias. You think moderation at scale is impossible, but Parler seems to do it fine and is satisfying millions of users, while you stay small and isolated, but content in your world view. When you see fake news, you take the stand that there is only one view that is fit to be published, and all others silenced, and you're fine with that, and don't see how totalitarian it is. When you see oppression by Police, you think of a systemic failure, rather than a few bad apples. When you see a traitor that reveals military secrets and then who gets the government to pervert their body with new sex organs, you see liberty and freedom. You think trans people and gay people deserve more rights than straight people and white people and normal families. When you see AntiFa, you see people justified to inflict violence on strangers because you think it's a good cause (yours). When you look at BLM and their wish to destroy the nuclear family and burn down an America who will not kneel, you side with them, and against Americans. When you see a healthy and prosperous American society with a long and colorful history of change and learning and betterment and success against all odds, you see a failure that you could do better. It's so interesting, I mean, how you people at Techdirt think. I literally don't know a SINGLE person in real life who holds these kinds of beliefs, yet there seem to be so many here. It's like an alternate universe, like the Twllight Zone.

Re: Re: 'If we can't kill it then we can at least cripple it.'

Look, you can't understand us because you're white. You were born white. That gives you an unfair advantage over the rest of us. You've used that advantage all your life, and now it's time to pay the consequences for your unearned privilege that you've been enjoying all your life. Give me your money, right now. Then get down on your knees and say you're sorry, and stay on your knees until I say otherwise. You don't have any right to defend yourself, your parents and grandparents sacrificed that right when they built their comfortable life out of their unearned white privilege. There's really nothing that you can say that will change anything. All the wealth and prosperity that you have built on the backs of the slaves and the spics and the niggers and the chinks and the waps by flouting your whiteness and your money and feigning ignorance needs to be given back to the people who really built it. The leaders have to fall, wealth needs to be distributed to others, you need to give up your microphone, your voice, your home, your family and get the right level of BLM spirit. That's right, BLM. The Marxist Cult of BLM. I'm not shy about it. We need to purge the old habits, the old culture, the old ways, and we all need to focus the religious zeal of Christianity on back people. And only black people No one else. We are right. We are righteous. There is nothing you an do about it. Don't even try to defend yourself, it's hopeless. Scub all mentions of Cops from your web sites, you may not picture Cops and Good Guys any more. Or Paw Patrol, on Nikelodeon, that's gotta go. No confederate flags, no General Lee. No Dukes of Hazard. That's over too. Daisy is gone, Gone with the Wind is Gone with the the new BLM order. You are a child and you cannot be trusted with your own mind.

The publishers might still try to kill off smaller libraries, though. All they would need to do for that is convince local governments that other things deserve more funding. Slash a few thousand dollars from a library’s budget every year and nobody will notice until the “closed due to lack of funding“ sign appears. That’ll make people angry, sure. But it’ll also buy publishers at least a small amount of time to gouge those angry people before the re-funding begins.

        Re:

Summary of your post: "Publishers .. kill off smaller libraries. .. no one will notice .. people angry .. gouge angry people .. before .. refunding.. "

Is everyone evil? Publishers are evil and kill off libraries? Government is evil and no one notices? Publishers gouge angry people, force them to buy something that should be free, until re-funding begins?

Who is not evil in your twisted universe? You are the good one? You're going to save everybody from the evil publishers and the evil government because you are morally and ethically superior?

Really, Stephen? How superior are you? Very superior? Tell us about your superior vision. We are all anxiously awaiting a savior from these evil forces, and you must be one to deliver the message. Will you save us from BLM? From AntiFa (which you know so much about)? What is the message again? Let the leftists run things and evil will disappear? You are morally the height of goodness, generosity and knowledge? Trust you with our tax dollars? Give your home and your retirement money and all your income to BLM and let them pay reparations to black people? Is that it?

        Tell us, Stephen. Tell us.

We are all anxiously awaiting a savior

If you want to keep libraries from shutting down, you have to get off your ass and push your government — at any and every level — to fund libraries better. If you want libraries to expand any efforts to modernize, you have to get off your ass and convince those blocking such efforts — like, say, publishing companies with a grudge against ebook lending — to get the hell out of the way.

You can ask for a savior to come along and do those things for you. But you’ll end up waiting forever for them to show up. Corporations won’t save you; neither will institutions. You can only save yourself. If you want to save libraries, you have to do the work. Neither God nor Google will do it for you.

I wouldn’t sit around asking for a leader. I’d get off my ass and do the work, even if that means I do it alone. Waiting for a leader, a savior, or someone to show you the way to Shangri-la will keep you from doing anything worth a damn. If you want to take part in a campaign to recall a politician or get a pothole fixed or save a library from being defunded and that campaign doesn’t already exist, start it yourself. If it does exist, don’t wait for someone to come knocking on your door and say “hey, we could really use your help” — go to their door and tell them you want ot help.
