The clock is ticking — we're past the halfway point of January, and you've got just under two weeks to submit something for Gaming Like It's 1925! We're looking for analog and digital games that are inspired by and/or make direct use of materials from works published in 1925, which have now entered the public domain, and giving away prizes for the best ones in multiple categories.

Check out the game jam page for the full rules and some links to public domain works you could draw on, as well as game design tools for designers of all experience levels. The jam runs until January 31st and then our judges will begin playing the entries to select winners in six categories. The winners will be able to choose one of or great prizes:

Check out the winners of the 2019 and 2020 jams (which used works from 1923 and 1924 respectively) then sign up for the jam and get designing. We've already got a few entries this year, and we can't wait to see more and play everyone's games!

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Too successful?

I'm starting to think that at least this year, the Gaming-like-it-192X game jams is starting to become a victim of its own success. What I mean by that is that there are two competing Gatsby game jams and seem to be absorbing the energy the Gaming-like-it's-192X jams usually have when it comes to making games from newly public domain works. Also, maybe people are taking the fact that copyright is expiring again for granted, which I guess is a good problem to have.

It's too early to say one way or the other. Most submissions come in towards the end.

      Re: Too successful?

In a way, I don't see that as a problem. The purpose is to promote the idea that the public domain has a huge value beyond simply making the original works freely available. A bunch of competing events promoting this same idea is a good thing, and to be encouraged.

Hopefully what this means is that the TD promoted version gets to experience a wider range of works being adapted and promoted, rather than being overrun by a bunch of entries that focus only on Gatsby. I suspect this to be true of any future year where there's a notably popular or influential work - some will choose events to focus on that work, while others prefer to participate in a more rounded events. Even if the TD event's only long term value is to encourage people to investigate each year's lesser known new PD content rather than just gravitate toward the one they already know about, it's still a win IMHO.

Personally, i neither can, nor do i want to even imagine wading through an all-Gatsby anything jam.

Do items freely given to the public domain by living artists count? I just read one of my favorite comic book writers committed all his characters to the public domain and something like this to give them life beyond the original artist

      Re:

As long as it incorporates something from 1925 whose copyright expired on December 31, 2020 on midnight, you're good!
