To WAP or not to WAP

from the I-want-my-iMode dept

Mark Baker writes "Here's a report from Telecom 99 on why you don't need WAP to be successful at wireless data. I wish iMode would get more press in North America. It's a great story."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

How is i-mode different from what Palm is trying to do with the Palm VII? Aside from the fact that the i-mode devices have are phones.

      Re: No Subject Given

iMode is (Compact)HTML & HTTP, which means that much existing content can be rendered as-is. It's not TCP/IP yet, but DoCoMo has made public their intent to go that route. As the article mentions, that drastically reduces the barrier to entry for both carrier and content producer.

The Palm requires client-side installation of a PQA (analogous to a style sheet). In the web model, which hopefully DoCoMo will continue to follow, that's done on the server (transcoding). Yet Another Barrier to Entry.
