DailyDirt: Cars You Can't Buy (Yet?)

There are plenty of cool cars that are just too expensive for most people to even think about buying, but sometimes the really cool cars are the ones that aren't even quite ready to be sold (Tesla SUV, anyone?). Gull wing doors and exotic metal alloys are usually the key parts of concept vehicles and prototype cars. Here are just a couple cars you might have seen and a prediction of what we'll all be driving in the next few decades.

• In 1957, Ford introduced the Ford Nucleon -- a nuclear-powered concept car that ran on uranium fission instead of any kind of petroleum. Sure, it wouldn't emit any carbon dioxide, but it's not clear how the radioactive waste would be disposed of.... [url]
• The Volkswagen XL1 is almost ready for production as a 2-seater plug-in hybrid that gets about 261 miles per gallon of diesel. If fuel economy is all you want, fuel economy is all you get. [url]
• Shell predicts that petroleum-powered passenger cars will be mostly gone by 2070, replaced by hybrid hydrogen-electric vehicles or other oil-free cars. Or maybe by 2070, we just won't have much reason to drive anywhere? [url]
