Assuming there is monetary value to the stream of this event, namely the HUGO Awards organization, any advertises, the award recipients, etc. why can't they seem compensation due to the errors on the broadcast stream supplier?
It would seem a pretty legitimate case here for some or all of the affected parties to seek to be compensated right?
If more folks were to follow that route, it would be working within the system and provide precedent one way or another on the limits of such robot enforcement. Some here is libel for damages caused it would seem.
Not a big fan of the legal whip but it seems a good choice in this case to influence future. Sauce for the goose as it were.
Actually they can't do anything in this case.. There is in effect a law that says you can't wiretap without a warrant, but there is no penalty in the law for doing that or a recourse for cases where it can be proved. Basically there is nothing judicial, they can't strike down the law, that does no good since it already says that it's illegal. They can only say there is no law under which you can claim redress for damages done. They can't fix that.
Only if she does ..... and don't forget your scores are tallied for execution as well as technical merit, plus style. Wonder if there is a group of required skills that must be demonstrated.
Gotta look at this from the point of the FBI Agents
Do you think after the first 10 minutes that the FBI agents wanted to keep doing this for 5 days ??? They are like any other workers.. They filled out a report because they were told too. Hopefully we hire some smart folks to be FBI agents, they knew right away this was a waste of time I bet. How much other surveillance and such do you think is just write something down so you can tell your boss agent that you did it, so he can tell his boss it was done. $$$ down the drain .. I mean here in my hometown, if you don't buy a dog license and don't call in to tell them the dog is dead, they send 2 (not 1 but 2) animal control agents to your house to check if you have a dog that is not licensed. But we still have drug dealers and drive by shootings, just no unlicensed dogs. What a colossal waste of dollars by our bureaucratic entities in most cases.
Now if there was a real threat they hopefully would have recognized it and put the proper effort into it. But this way they got 5 days of per-diem and mostly free time out of the office, didn't have a choice so they filled out paperwork to make it look like they were doing something besides drinking coffee and bitching about what a stupid assignment this was.
Those emails and calls would have been more effective it everyone had been a 5$ donation to some PAC that would actually represent an anti-SOPA type point of view. Since we know there are so few good politicians, I am sure such a PAC could probably use that money to lobby a few of the bad ones away from their current point of view.
It all comes down to buying influence (or good government) - odd how Eddy Murphy had it all right, but then not many watched "Distinguished Gentlemen" even for free.
Locks only keep honest people out. You can't fix stupid.
When there is demand, supply will appear. The war on drugs is so successful right? That is a product that requires physical setup/transportation/distribution etc... digital products are several orders of magnitude easier to obtain/distribute. Same stupid mistakes over and over again. The only folks this will harm are innocent/honest people. Then some wonder wonder why we have such a low approval rating of politicians.
You can't fix stupid.... one of the few absolute truths left in the world.
If I hard coded an IP into a host table to get around a DNS block and connected via SSL to a web page - wouldn't that be circumventing?? Even an SSL session could be construed as circumventing - so if I did connect SSL to a site, then it was blocked w/o a hearing or injunction - would I be guilty of circumventing because I had been encrypting my traffic. I could expect that any encryption would be circumventing if you want to take it that far.
As Richard Pryor said -- the American Just-us system for Just-us with lawyers ... or maybe they should rename this the "No-Lawyer Left Behind Act"
Apparently the grin didn't come through -- I take the world less seriously every day, if I couldn't laugh I might have to go physco on some folks.. :)
Then the article isn't totally wrong - they have some real points. I have to admit as a person who has coded in numerous languages and have installed/supported several operating systems -- C & Unix are very powerful but overtly complex and not user friendly. I'll take pascal over C any day. "BTW" is does anyone still use Pascal??
I used to code for Accuray(ABB) coating control systems on a Honywell Mini-Computer too. Big box storing code on 8" disks - loved being able to edit memory registers directly while it's running! The Teletype machine for input sucked though!
