You never own the things you pay for.
I can see no benefit served to the public by allowing a company to decide to kill a game whenever they want.
I can see no benefit served to the public by having laws that make it illegal with crazy penalties if someone wants to strip the DRM so they can still play the game they purchased.
Its happened with movies, games, music, televisions, electronics, playstations, nintendos, Tesla's...
Perhaps we should demand better, that the law punishes them for removing access to things you purchased & interfere with your enjoyment of them.
Allowing them to keep inventing ways to ensure future profits by allowing them to retain long term control isn't something that should happen.

Making a difference and it only took checks notes this many deaths for them to decide they unleashed something the framers would have be horrified by.
The court has spent more time on protecting the unborn than considering that giving out free passes to murder was a bad idea.

And this is why demanding tech fix societies problems will never work.
"Conservatives" will claim bias claiming it never happens to the other side, "Liberals" will claim victory until it happens to them.
Y'all live in a nation where elected officials repeat lies & no one holds them accountable.
Any attempts at accountability are deflected with its because I'm conservative & the base springs into action, completely ignoring if the original statement was true or not.
We have states where the Governors & State Legislature made moves that made the pandemic worse & killed citizens needlessly (cause 1 asshole's ego isn't really a need), and nothing will happen.
Any attempt at accountability will met with Conservatives refusing to accept facts, claim its all political, & claims the dead are just bamboo manikins China air dropped to make them look bad.
These people who claim to be followers of Jeebus refused to do the bare minimum that would have saved lives because they believed their rights matter more... and that 'Merika in a nutshell.
FB would have been better served by not doing something this stupid, but the alternative would have been monitoring groups & working with law enforcement and... yeah Zucks really doesn't want anyone outside to see that happens inside. So do your best to shovel them onto other platforms & let them deal with it.

Most likely Sony uploaded another batch of files to ContentID.
The broken tool that is meant to protect their rights even imaginary ones... like that whole bird song thing, or silence, or white noise.
This is the same tool that claims a media outlet "owns" NASA footage they rebroadcast.
Rightsholders are much to busy to make sure they are doing things right, so they just submit what they claim to own and allow the completely broken system complete the illusion they have all of these rights and are allowed to be paid by the work of others.

Its a pity the laws are always written to punish the little people & not the government.
If I stole my neighbors lawnmower they wouldn't let me say oh the other neighbor has to sign off on its return & I need more paperwork... they would arrest me take the stolen property & hold it until the trial was over then return it to the rightful owner.
A simple solution would be forcing them to work in that whole "speedy" trial sort of way. Have penalties for them playing chase the ball through the system that doesn't seem to know what it is doing. But then in my mind the proper solution would be after 30 days with nothing happening, the amount to be returned doubles & keeps doing so.
Once there is a penalty its amazing how they might stop just robbing people based on nothing more than how dare you have money.

They post the complete text of the Constitution every year, every year thousands of people are reporting the tweets and screaming into the void about how they are trying get people to overthrow the government. (something something venn diagram of jan 6th rioters & those who think the words of the constitution are a call to overthrow white christian america.)
These "true" Americans have no idea what their rights actually are, just what they imagine. We force people who wish to become American to have a great understanding of the nation & our rights than we demand people we elect to Congress have.
The big take away is "all men are created equal" to these people seems to mean that they have more rights than the next guy & will fight tooth and nail to deny them the same treatment they get.

Yep, and the rejections on Insta make even less sense than the FB rejections.
There is something wrong inside there, but because no one outside can know anything about it the only review is by the same nodding heads who approved the system in the first place without any considerations outside of their heterosexual world view.

An easy rule of thumb that would avoid this sort of stupidity would simply be for them to look at the picture, imagine it was a heterosexual couple doing the exact same thing... would you pull it then? If no, its fine.

Re: Re: Re: Re:
But the victims are on a spectrum.
How many had deleted data vs how many were harmed by the botnet running on the boxen?
What is the value of data vs bank details being gotten by the bots?
Loss of data is a bad thing but if you see people financially wiped out because WD refused to stop the insanity...
Its a trolley problem, scores of people could keep getting ripped off for yet more time... or a few lose data. Neither option is really "good", but when all you have is a trolley lever someone gets squished.
And one does wonder if WD was informed & is playing the poor us card because if the details of how simple it was to cause this cascade of wiping they might look bad for not pushing a notification to the users alerting them to the issue & remove the vulnerable botnet machines from networks.
Mental drift net recalls a hack where they patched peoples routers uninvited, left a note explaining why, and left them more secure than they found them.
While wiping the data is bad there is still detail missing from the full picture, was it every WD box he could find or just the ones who were actually in a botnet?
Had there been other attempts at trying to block the botnet from infecting the boxen?
S/He could just be a giant asshole, it happens...
But in my cold black heart I can see how being pushed into a corner where no one will listen, they let the bad things keep happening, & someone discovers the big red button that can end it and then they press it.
But then none of this could have happened if WD hadn't commented out safety measures, if they had pushed a firmware to patch the product (showing they actually care about consumers even if they don't buy the latest greatest thing) or made a large announcement that we no longer support these devices, if you have it connected to the internet you can & will be hacked. Pull the ethernet out immediately and run a scan looking for xxx botnet infection.
Figure out if just reinstalling the firmware will wipe out the botcode, and just be good citizens about it.
WD owns up to an actual problem, actually actively does something about it (even just information) would make for a HUGE story in the news cycle rather than 'we take your data seriously....'
