Hi!
Welcome back!
So, how's the lobbying going?
Ya know, we kinda missed you guys around here--don't stay away for so long next time.
Anyhow, have a nice day.
flout: Openly disregard (a rule, law or convention)
flaunt: Display (something) ostentatiously, esp. in order to provoke envy or admiration or to show defiance.
Dress or behave in a sexually provocative way.
Yes, but...
So the whole "gatekeeper" gig is going to the dogs--that happens. But ya know what'll always be there? Critics. Art critics, food critics, music critcs, etcetera ad nauseaum. Those self-appointed people/groups who declare "this is the best and here's why" and for some reason other people listen to them.
Believe it not, it's a niche. Apparently it's a needed niche as we have critics for (almost?) everything.
Sure, it's not as good as being a gatekeeper--but you can keep the same mindset (sorta) and still make money at it.
There's another bill in the works--wish for the life of me I could remember the name--which will quietly revamp the laws and suddenly require your online identity to be entirely provably you... as well as making several new things felonies.
Hey, the Federal Government of America has been doing 'black flag'/inciting incident operations for well over 100 years.
So, if history is any kind of proof--yes, the DOJ provoked this response on purpose in order to start a war.
For historical perspective, see 'Bay of Tonkin incident', sinking of the Lusitania, etc, etc, ad nauseaum. There's really a huge list of just such 'inciting' incidents.
For all you know there might be--but said person would have been subtly dismissed by every major media outlet. Overlooked, glossed over, patronized, belittled if/when mentioned at all.
Wait... sounds almost like I'm describing somebody already running.
They don't need to be sneaky--there aren't enough people paying attention to matter.
Lately there's really hardly any secrets--just stuff which is severely under-reported. All the under-handed crap is right out there in the open, just not publicised.
Well yeah. Useless laws won't stop piracy, will constrain competition and 'Lawful' users will be horridly annoyed.
In short, a grand waste of time.
For parallels: see 'The Prohibition" which [sarc]TOTALLY[/sarc] stopped the production and distribution of alcohol in the United States.
For further parallels: The 'War on Drugs', the 'War on Poverty', the 'War on Education' (I think we're winning that one actually, I hear education is waay down...)

Just ask him/her how lobbying has been of late and call it at that.

Obviously they don't need SOPA/PIPA to just shut down websites.

The real question:
That making stuff unavailable online is BAD marketing?
Just 'cause the got the one half doesn't mean they've yet managed to wrap their burdened neurons around the other half...
