Late on Friday, we posted a story about how Chris Dodd at the MPAA appeared to be directly threatening politicians who had taken money from Hollywood, but refused to pass SOPA/PIPA. Of course, pretty much everyone expects pay-for-laws type of corruption in politics these days, but it's quite rare for the head of a major lobbying trade group to be so explicit about it. That story went viral in a major way over the weekend -- becoming the most trafficked story on Techdirt... ever. I would doubt that whatever Dodd/the MPAA did reaches to the level of legally actionable... but others aren't so sure. In the comments there's an interesting discussion of the nature of "quid pro quo" in determining if something is considered a bribe. Some point out that Dodd appears to be highlighting the "quo" part, which is where things get dicey.Pretty soon after the post went up, a We The People petition showed up on the White House's site, asking for a federal investigation of Dodd and the MPAA to see if they were "bribing" public officials. That petition has been gathering an awful lot of signatures all weekend, and it seems quite likely that it will soon reach the required threshold, requiring a comment from the White House. At the very least, I would be interested to see how the White House responds...

I seriously doubt any of them are going to want DOJ in their business inspection how they are conducting lawmaking for it to gather any support.
This will be handled like most of the We The People petitions. It'll have a lot of nice words about how it can't be done or is not in the interests of the US.

Dodd is soooo corrupt.
He is so corrupt that he doesn't even realize he is corrupt. To Dodd it is just the normal way of doing business. When he was in congress he voted the way he was paid (dammit). Hence he considered himself an honest politician.

What needs to be done is this...
1. Contact the Government of all States and point out all the issues they have wanted to have a Convention on. Call for a open topic Convention statement to be sent to Congress all during a month like March 2013.
2. Should Congress receive the 2/3rds required then all States should send a representative to a meeting place during September 2013. You do not need Congress's approval t do this. You may want to host this in Canada.
3. These representatives can then propose and debate how the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the nature of Congress, and the Administration can be changed. These ideas can then be put to a vote to obtain the required majority.
4. To further increase the legality of by-passing Congress it is recommended that the end proposal is put to the population to decide where the required number of States must approve the proposal for this to become law.
5. Congress is then informed of the changes. Should they refuse to accept this then all elections should be suspended and no bills from the unlawful Congress should be turned into law. Then either you can have the Army expel these traitors from Congress, wait until they give up, or build Congress #2 and bomb Congress #1 into rubble.
6. Convention complete. Long live Democracy.

To answer a glib question seriously
I know this was more of a flip question aimed at his statement on TV, but this question can also be aimed at the larger issue about lobbying, and money in politics that deserves a comment.
Currently money in politics is protected expression, and honestly I don't have a major problem with that. The money is supposed to buy advertising time, and if the average TV watcher votes for a politician based off an ad that doesn't even have ten percent of the charisma and persuasion of that Slap Chop commerical, than we get what we deserve.
On the other hand, which was the point of the original article and this is why I think the petition is important,the speech (money) does not behold the receiver to obey. In demanding that MPAA contributions should lead to instant compliance, he showed his, and the MPAA's hand. And what a dirty set of cards they were carrying!

I find that argument irrelevant. By his/their own arguments, copyright infringement is no different than theft of physical property irregardless of legal distinctions. Therefore, by their own rules, what they did was bribery irregardless of whatever fine legal distinctions they may be short of.
This is one of those "unintended consequences" they keep being warned about, but choose to willfully ignore.
If they want to set the rules, I WILL use those rules against them.

As his secretary I don’t think Chris would be on his own side and all the backlash is expected. I don’t think Chris thinks of himself as a good person at all and if you listen to the autistic adhd rants I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about either.
