On the one hand, it's ridiculous for anyone to go to jail for fiddling with an electronic device that they own.
On the other hand, i'm really not comfortable with the Chief Librarian being the one in charge of making laws and cases like this one can only help bring attention to this perversion of our legal and political systems.
I have a hard time understanding how having a lawsuit investor does not cause an immediate conflict of interest in any case.
Justice does not come solely from dollars and cents but investment rewards do. Anything that puts more weight on the money instead of the right and lawful outcome taints the justice system as a whole.
Apps are easily monetized and controlled, but the bread and butter of smartphones and tablets is the robust mobile web browser. Bonus: Your shit works with regular, old, boring computers too!
The more i think about it, the better that analogy gets. What they have is a herd of dairy cows, but if they keep cutting them up for meat they will soon run out of both milk and meat.
I think you're all missing the point.
TERRORISTS ARE REALLY SCARY AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD HIRE A CONSULTANT TO GIVE YOU SOME SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT IT EVEN THOUGH YOU WON"T ACTUALLY BE ANY SAFER!
Owning is more important than creating. Selling is more important than sharing. Control is more important than inspiration. Money is more important than happiness.
I had Buckyballs on a wishlist of geek toys. After seeing this i deleted them from the wishlist and went and bought some Zen Magnets. I didn't do it because of the quality claims (Honestly - who really cares if the standard deviation of their desk toy is 13.7e-3 or 5.3e-3?) I did it because i don't like giving money to douchebags. So i guess the cost of being a douchebag is about $25 in this case.
(Actually, the Zen Magnets guy seemed kind of douche-y too, but the lesser of two douchebags award goes to the one that fights with juvenile humor and science instead of the one who uses bogus DMCA takedowns and legal threats.)
It's cheaper to buy a couple of cameras that no one ever looks at than to hire a person who might provide some actual security. Times are tough all over.
I wish i could find the source, but i read an article a while back describing the patent review process and the bureaucracy surrounding it. It basically comes down to paperwork.
If a reviewer OKs a patent, it's done until someone else challenges it, and even then it's mostly someone else's problem. If they deny a patent there's a good chance theyy'll be repeatedly justifying their decision with the applicant and/or their lawyers and their boss(es) through a lengthy appeals process.
And oh, by the way, part of the reviewers' yearly performance review that determines promotions and pay increases hinges on their throughput - how many patents they reviewed.
Saying no is a bigger hassle than saying yes, so they usually say yes. Ridiculous.
But how do you effectively communicate this sort of information to voters? At first glance the AG's actions seem like an effort to do something about the problem and their campaigns can very easily spin criticism of it as "soft on child prostitution."
I don't think most voters are smart enough to understand this argument. How could anyone effectively convey to them that the AG's grandstanding is actually hurting the people he's claiming to protect without coming across as a kiddie-porn-loving pervert?
The killer app for the new smartphones is, ironically, not an app, but the robust web browser experience that they can offer. Apps are big news because they are easily monetized, but the real revolution is having full-featured access (ideally, that would include flash, but that's its own issue) literally at in the palm of your hand anywhere, at any time.
Anyone who is focused on apps is not seeing the big picture - they're just blinded by $.
I'm starting to come around to the radical side of the debate - no more imaginary property at all. Companies spend more time and money fighting each other over who owns ideas than doing something meaningful with those ideas.
I'm sure this type of business wanking is one of the tangential reasons why we're experiencing an economic slump.
