Re: The Rich should pay $10,000 to eat an ordinary meal at McDonald's.
Building a successful business that provides a good or service that people want and adds to the overall strength of the economy doesn't add anything to society?
Are there greedy people who hoard money and wealth? Yes. But there are also a lot of greedy people who do not have money or wealth that do nothing but take from society.
One thing I haven't see n in regards to this digital personage, is a comparison the the movie "S1mone"
That was a movie about a digital actress who took the world by storm and resulted in the mental breakdown of both her creator and the director who controlled her.
You know what, you're right. If the government doesn't like a person, but can't find anything criminal to charge them with, they have options.
For instance, they can exercise eminent domain on the person's house and then charge that person for trespassing.
Or they can find something inane and unique that person does and pass a law that makes that activity illegal and then charge him for illegal conduct.
It is so simple. The government should be free to hold vendetta's against anyone they please and act in any way they want as long as they are acting as a bully under the guise of law.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Imagine if this were written about Jews, blacks, Muslims or Latinos...
The funny thing about taste is, if you don't like it, don't read it.
Not everyone has the same taste thus not everyone will like everything.
On the subject of offense, it is not the author's job to avoid offending other people. If someone is offended, again they can stop reading/watching/viewing/playing what ever offends them.

Re:
It is the job of the law maker to prove a need for the law, not the other way around. California passed a law they couldn't defend and thus lost. I see nothing wrong with this outcome.

Re:
The problem here is that I can see where the "new" work is just a variation on the original.
That is not a problem. There is no law against being inspired by someone else's work. The two works are different enough that a lawsuit would not make it passed filing.
As Mike said, you can't own an idea, only the expression of the idea.
Re: Re: Imagine if this were written about Jews, blacks, Muslims or Latinos...
I think you miss the point. This book is not advocating parenting tips. This book is a humor book aimed at adults and specifically adults who have kids. It is humorous because it externalizes the inner monolog parents have had late at night when their kids won't sleep.
You won't find this book on the kids book shelf at the book store. You won't find this book in the self help section or the parenting section. You will find this book in the Humor section of book stores. That is what you are supposed to take it as.
If someone reads this book and decides to actually talk to their kids this way, it is a problem with the person not the book.
Imagine if this were written about Jews, blacks, Muslims or Latinos...

And the creatures who crawl, run and creep.
I know you are not thirsty. That's bulls**t.
Stop lying.
Lie the f*** down, my Jew, and sleep."

You know, I am just not seeing anything to get raged over here. I tried substituting those protected classes of people and the passage just doesn't make any sense.

Instead, Capcom is going to give you a piece of software with all the save features of the original Nintendo and possibly even less.
Actually, the original Nintendo was way more useful than this. The Legend of Zelda, one of the first games to feature a save system, allowed for 3 saves that you could copy and erase.
What Capcom proposes is a completely useless game.
As for the searches, the phone is within the arm reach area in the car generally, and looking at the phone should not be considered different from looking through a stack of papers on the passenger's seat. The method that the data is stored does not grant it any more or any less immunity from search.
Wrong. This is no different than a police officer demanding that I open a locked box or suitcase. If they do not have a warrant to search those boxes, they should be required to have a warrant to search my phone.
If something is in the open, that is one thing, but the contents of my phone are not in the open. They are behind a closed door.
Looks like it is time for someone to modify the remote wipe app to wipe the phone after a specific amount of time without connecting to a control server.
That is what they tried and failed to do here. They tried to apply a Miller test to violent games as the basis for the restriction. The court saw through that and ruled it unconstitutional.
It looks you have no idea who Joe Konrath is or what it is he advocates for writers. I recommend that you become more familiar with him. He has been discussed recently here and you can find his blog here:
This guy needs to take a note from Joe Konrath and completely bypass his jittery publisher. Publish the book yourself and do it the way you want it. No stupid edits to avoid lawsuits that won't come. Just a nice book exactly as you intend it.
Here is a list of things I think we need to do to fix out patent mess. This list is not all inclusive and more can be added.
1. Get rid of software patents.
2. Get rid of gene patents.
3. Get rid of business method patents.
4. Require a working prototype with the application.
5. Change the system to a 10/10 system. In this, the applicant has 10 years from filing to get the product to market, if they do, they can continue to control the patent for the remaining 10 years. If not, the patent expires.
Its already like that. We have tech/software companies filing patents for nothing more than a concept. They often do not have working prototypes in hand at the time of patenting, just some notes scribbled on a napkin.
