lol, that's pretty funny. for a minute there i thought you were serious.
let's not forget, people use the electricity grid, the phone system, the highway system, and the postal system for all sorts of bad things.
drunk drivers couldn't hurt people without roads, so we need to hold local and state highway systems accountable for not making their roads drunk proof. the automotive industry profits form drunk driving as well, we should hold them accountable too. companies that make guns profit from the drug trade, get them too. allergy medication gets used to make crystal meth, clearly the pharmaceutical companies profit from meth and need to be sued as well.
in fact, i am pretty sure that everything bad in this world is the fault of a company somewhere, and bad parenting, sue them all and that will surely fix all the things that have gone wrong.
it's changed the way i look at homebrew software forever.
also, the problem with modchips isn't piracy or even technical restrictions, after all you can play pretty much any conslole game ever invented in an emulator on a PC and not bother with modchips at all.
the issue is loss leadership. if you sell a console at a loss, then if someone buys your consoles strictly for homebrew purposes, without buying any of your high profit margin games, then you have lost money. it's better to sell your console at cost or at a small profit and fully embrace the homebrew community since they create incentive to buy your consoles. everyone will be better off.
Re: If you don't understand don't pretend you do..
let's not forget that most programming organizations have one or more layers of abstraction (dev managers, product managers, program managers, etc.) to shield programmers from various interruptions... with the added benefit of also shielding the rest of the company from programmers :-)
when i was a lead on a helpdesk i would carry on 5 or more conversations at once via IM, often with agents that needed help but didn't want to put their call on hold.
sms is the same way. you can carry on several conversations at once or in sequence because of the nature of text vs. the nature of voice.
on the flipside, there is no tone of voice in text, so subtleties like sarcasm are often lost in translation. if you need an answer to a yes/no question, then im/sms is awesome.
also, it's much easier to log text communication than it is to log voice communication. most im clients have a mechanism for logging and there is always good old copy and paste. logged text has all of the tone of voice issues inherent with all text communication plus the added bonus of being an essentially permanent record. how many scandals have been made public over the years thanks to leaked emails and IM's?
granted, you can record a phone call as well, but it's tougher to do and tougher to edit.
it doesn't seem to be the same as a 9-5 job where people retire after working 35 years at one place.
dude, where do you work?
in america you work somewhere until you get one too many cost of living raises. then your position gets eliminated and your ass is out on the street and your job goes to india or someone willing to do it for half of what you made.
hopefully there is already a patent on one corporation selling it's customers out to another for some behind closed doors deal.
MS did this already with hollywood (HDCP, playsforsure, etc.) and this looks like some sort of deal with a government (probably china or england, possibly the US). we won't know until the first country comes forward requiring all mobile phones support the "feature".
at&t is the new mac fanboi telco of choice since they sell the jesus phone exclusively.
since starbucks practically frisks you at the door for a macbook, it only makes sense that you would switch to the provider that most of your customers have already switched to.
What we need is a voting system where if I, say, vote for Cthulu**, and he concedes then I can have a secondary or even tertiary vote that will be given to the candidate of my choosing. That way I don't "waste" a vote and we can more easily have a clear winner and we don't have people whining that people who vote for a third party are throwing their votes away.
that's just retarded.
you can't rig elections if people can make secondary and tertiary votes. you can't buy elections with PR campaigns if people can make multiple choices. also, news organizations can't offer real time coverage of elections if there are multiple parties and multiple votes that have to be tallied. think of all that lost advertising revenue. whole industries have been built around there only being two very predictible parties and two overall philosophies, do you want those industries to go under?
a lot of time and money has been invested in gerrymandering the country in to a two party system so that's not going to be undone in this or any other lifetime.
you have plenty of choice, each election features two criminals who tell very well crafted lies based on focus groups, opinion polls, and consultants of all kinds. a lot of money had been spent on those lies, the least you can do is believe one of them.
the system is simple: just choose which lies you want to be disappointed by after the election and then play along and act surprised when the winner fails to deliver on them. the system works if we all do our part.
for every person that says the artists need to make a living, i say watch an episode of MTV cribs and then go kill yourself.
sports cars, alimony, rehab, and plastic surgery don't pay for themselves, so clearly we need to change the constitution again to make sure these heroes can overdose on the toilet with dignity.
the beta sucked and i haven't given the product a second glance.
i had hopes for it in the closed beta when they were the venice project, but the product never worked (direct x rendering for video, are you guys serious?) for me.
Re: Facebook makes young teens vulnerable to real-life predators
yeah, but if you make people pass an IQ test to get online, it's "discriminatory" and creates "hurts feelings".
truth be told, 85% of the people who use the internet are too stupid to be there in the first place, and the internet would be a better place without them, but for some reason that's considered elitist.
they also forgot to mention "focusing on core competencies", they didn't mention that they were the "leading provider of" something, and they forgot to include a diagram with a cloud that says "internet".
the real issue is that people don't take responsibility for their own actions in real life, so what makes you think they would take responsibility for their actions online?
when people get in trouble online they just blame their computers or the internet itself rather than own up to doing something without understanding the consequences.

word of mouth works in all cases
if your product or service is great, it works to your advantage as people spread the word that it's great.
if your product sucks, it works to your disadvantage as people spread the word that your product is junk or that you company is a bunch of thieves.
in either case, it worked, and people got the message.
