Re: Re: Re: Re: That letter is a big deal; withdrawing unanimous consent is real and it matters
With ALL the opposition and the public saying "We do not want to be criminalized" do you really think this bill with all its bad parts (the gutting of the DMCA safe harbors, the increased third party liability, the absence of judicial review, and the felonization of streaming video) has a snowball's chance in hell of being passed in its current form?
Re: Re: Re: "undermining our nation's national security"
The current wild west of criminal infringement is a perfect example of of criminals evaluating the risk/reward trade off and stealing the content industry blind
You're right... How the RIAA robs from musicians and how the MPAA robs from those boom operators should have people like Doug Morrison and Mitch Glazier locked up.
Re: Re: That letter is a big deal; withdrawing unanimous consent is real and it matters
Wyden has put a hold on the bill. He's threatened to filibuster it so it doesn't pass. Thing is, with everyone else piling onto it, it's that much harder for Leahy to gain support. So either it'll be filibustered, or the votes just aren't there to approve this.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: And a fourth site that could be in trouble
Actually, this exposes the problem in the system. This points out the points of failure in the internet system:
What SOPA does is to make sure that the net and sharing can’t coexist with Visa, MasterCard and PayPal. This means that only the stronger of the two groups will survive, and the copyright industry has their perception of the strength balance entirely wrong. The net and the human characteristic of sharing culture and knowledge are immensely stronger.
SOPA will neither kill the net nor the sharing of culture and knowledge. But it would kill Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, and it would kill centralized breakable DNS.
“But could this really happen?”, I hear people ask in scepticism. “Visa, MasterCard and PayPal are everywhere! Everywhere!” Yeah. They are. So were Gopher and GIF.
That's why Mastercard and Visa are scared. They stand to lose relevance in the digital world if this gets pushed through.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Doing the Math for Etsy, MPAA/RIAA Style
If DMCA, NET, and PROIP were repealed tomorrow and nothing put in their place, these sites would still all be legal, and they would be directly open for all the benefit of the world.
It's kind of telling that you've yet to look at the other factors affecting the numbers. Ex: where's the analysis on foreign sales of DVDs and tickets? The US dollar is also weak, and movie tickets have stagnated.
This is problematic on a number of gaming problems. You could take down a number of streaming sites based on a copyright claim. So building an audience on Justin.tv or Youtube would be non existant. Now, you would need another gatekeeper to ask in order to put up content, licensing from whoever owns it.
TBH, I looked for Cars 2 on Youtube. It would make sense to use that platform, charge a small fee (Say, $1...) then find out how much people pay for streaming technology.
This is based on many of the different studies that have come out, most of which show that anywhere from 20-40% of people "download"
Do you have any links to those studies? I've read quite a few that make the argument that the pricing is too high, the ones that infringe the most also download a lot, and more legal alternatives would allow for better service instead of enforcement.

Plutocracy, yes.
Fascist, no argument.
But a capitalist society would not have a government trying to pick the winners and losers in society.
