Re: The quality of Techdirt "news" is severly plummeting
aren't you missing the point of the entire blog post?? Mike isn't saying it is a scam or it isnt. he isnt telling anyone to use the service or not.
He's merely pointing out that Cash4Gold is drawing more attention to it's bad PR by choosing to file suits over it rather than to just explain it on its own website and leave it at that.
i completely agree with you on that one. They are the only ones who can do something about this, but if they dont play they wont get paid and i dont think they will want to go without pay. If the refs were to strike the NFL would find refs who wouldnt strike. People arent going to stop watching football so us normals out here can't really make any difference on this.
while i completely understand and agree with you on this richard, i just wanted to play devils advocate. So say a student does use getacoder. Now hasn't he paid for that work? so wouldn't that work be his. as in he owns it. So if he owns it then he might as well turn it in. Don't some professors take the work of their understudies as their own?
IT...i laugh at IT people, wannabe execs trying to make sure that they're precious network is secure along with everything else on it. please....whenever i get a new machine from IT i always have to figure a way around the rules so that i can perform my job correctly without going through all the procedures an IT department wants me to do to make sure it goes through their system correctly which could take months. Hell last time i tried to do something with IT correctly it took 2 years for them to unregister a router i was using to test my 802.11 designs from the work network that i had taken down right away. I kept getting emails and phone calls, and of course IT is outsourced so hardly any of them speak engrish, telling me to fill out form so and so which i already had and did again and again. I don't think that router'll ever leave their system.
that's a ridiculous thing to say. I knew i was going to be an engineering student going into college and was faced with picking Iowa or Iowa State. I definitely chose Iowa because I knew it was a much more fun school to party at. I graduated with an electrical engineering degree and am doing just fine. even people who pick "hard" majors may still want an animal house experience.
it's not about that. Usually the case is that they want to stay here. we certainly dont force them to stay but alot would choose to stay as it wasn't difficult to get a VISA and work here. It's still relatively easy to get an education here but now it's really difficult to get the VISA to stay here to work so many just go elsewhere and use their skills in foreign countries which does not help the US. I will never understand what the reasoning is behind this other than paranoia from 9/11 and what not.
i find gmail to be the only permanent thing (i hope) i have on the internet.
had a aol address...lost that when i cancelled that account
had a university address...lost that when i graduated
had a mediacom address...lost that when i switched to DSL
finally gmail has stayed constant and i wont have to update everything whenever i do switch services. that is what gmail is good for. I dont think it ever "said" something as there were plenty of free emails when that came out (hotmail, yahoo, etc)
now on to the topic: i joined facebook 4 years ago as a soph in college and thought it was great that it was a college only network. After my 13 year old brother in law tried to friend me last week i cancelled my account. It's becoming full of kids now and it isn't what it used to be. could this be the opposite of what Mike might be asking in the article? Now that kids, or teenagers, have the run of the place the older folks (me at 25) are getting out??
if you can accept that gambling can be an addiction then i would suggest that it wouldn't be much different than WoW being an addiction.
I dont think either are much of an addiction, but just a self control issue. But then again, why would we want to hold people responsible for themselves??
dont these things already exist in places like ski resorts, ice rinks, baseball fields, football fields. dont those all have some sort of sign that says everyone is responsible for themselves and that whoever owns the place cant be responsible for injury? is this really that different?
simple to put, i was not planning on buying this game and if the opportunity came up that on a whim i'd want to buy it (for some reason or another), after reading this article i dont think that whim will ever come.
from what i understood of that cracking down was not on chinese gold farmers selling to the US but chinese selling virtual items within the country itself. WoW items would certainly be included in that but i think and im not certain because i dont partake but 2nd life has its own currency and items and properties and that might be under that cracking down as well.
1. China has it's own WoW servers and the company that was hosting them lost the deal with blizzard so everything is being transferred to another company so that it can host it. That is why wow is down in china.
2. Chinese farmers who sell gold to players in the US play on US servers and those WoW servers are not down. And I think, i do think that the internet connects the US and china and they are still capable of playing on our US servers with their US clients
I applaud Mr. Healey for speaking up here on the comments about this and letting the conversation unfold. It takes some balls to start firing back on the internet for all the masses to take shots at him. Especially when some of the folks here can really get mean. Mad props to Jon for responding.
