I wonder if this means the court ruling regarding BT's blocking of newzbin2 (which they've failed to put in place according to BT customers here), will now have to be overturned, or is this one of those European laws that the UK can ignore.
I think they've got about a year and a half now to repeal the automatic cuts, in my opinion this lack of a budget is just the two sides flexing their muscles and letting the others know they won't roll over; ultimately both sides will concede a little and meet in the middle, neither side want the afore mentioned mandatory cuts.
Unfortunately, like many of the governments around the world, other peoples finances and lives are just a game. It's never going to hurt the people in the higher tax brackets, it's all about not losing face and coming in at the last minute with an 'acceptable to all parties' deal that makes it look as if both sides are heroes to their respective constituants.
As I am part of the "rest of the world" to me Thanksgiving is actually one US holiday/cultural event I wish was exported everywhere, it should be universal.

"It's just an easy slippery slope"
To be fair there are many different porn genres, you don't just have to focus on this one (focus being the operative word, it makes you go blind apparently)
Re: For the record, /I'm/ not "comfortable" with SOPA, either.
"Your notions of new ways possible on the Internet just don't cover the case of $100M movies."
You appear to think that the '$100M' spent on a movie isn't immediately recouped at the various premiers/box offices in theatres around the world. Then the various cable/satellite TV companies around the world buying the limited rights to show the movie.
I'm not suggesting that purchased copies of the film afterwards don't contribute to the overall takings on a film, but the movie is well in the black by the time it's released publicly in any format.
"the Chinese recently executed bankers for skimming, while Western gov't just burdens taxpayers to bail out those thieves. So in some ways, China's justice is better..."
In what 'ways' exactly? From the example you gave, you're insinuating that the death penalty is apt for theft, oh yeah, that's much better. SOMETIMES I read your posts, and, while not agreeing with most of what you say, I presumed intelligence and a sound state of mind - Then you post something like this and shatter those illusions completely. It's a shame really, I like a good discussion (when you can get over the constant, hypocritical criticism of DH and anyone else who opposes your veiws). I guess you can be fooled some of the time...
"Let MegaCorp use the simple (completel) URL “http://megacorp” if they want, so they don’t to bother with “megacorp.com”, and also have to grab “megacorp.xxx” to forestall someone else getting it."
This would work, but only when a company has an exclusive name, two companies with the same name peddling in two different markets wouldn't be able to both register.
Re: Re: Re: Re: If Microsoft is against SOPA, I'm MORE for it!
"These pirates you hate so much are already in their secret lairs devising the next great transfer protocol for sharing with each other. Its what they do, and they are better at it than anyone truly wants to believe."
I'm trying to get my head around it, I'm sure it must've made some sort of sense in the 19th century...
Is this the 'infringer' admitting guilt (therefore paying) but the patent owner saying they know they won't win a future battle so relinquish any claim to said patent?
Why would the infringer pay up... my head hurts now, cheers Glynn!
§ 1008. Prohibition on certain infringement actions
No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the manufacture, importation, or distribution of a digital audio recording device, a digital audio recording medium, an analog recording device, or an analog recording medium, or based on the noncommercial use by a consumer of such a device or medium for making digital musical recordings or analog musical recordings.
So actually, if you don't make money directly from copying and distributing, you're dandy-o to copy and distribute all you want? It doesn't say 'only for personal use' in there.
You could interpret this to mean that if Mike wanted to, he could set up a page on TD with no advertising on it, full of copied audio files and no-one could do anything about it.
Then, surely, if SOPA wanted to block the entire TechDirt domain, they'd be in for a hefty compensation claim as the page with the content cannot be making money from it?
Either way, a new law is coming soon and I'd suggest you cope with that.
Unfortunately you may be right about the law coming in in some shape or form, doesn't make it right in it's current form though, does it?
Just because something would work, doesn't mean something else couldn't work < \/>better.
Throwing all criminals into the middle of the ocean with concrete boots on would certainly stop them reoffending, does that mean it's right, or is it better that the crimes are judged as to how serious they are in a court of law and set punishments/rehabilitation orders put in place?
As far as I'm aware, SOPA proposes to bypass courts and will basically have the right to take down entire domains at the allegation of a single site within that domain linking to infringing material.
There is no measure as to how much content has to be infringing, whether money is being made/lost from the infringing content, nothing in place to protect the 'clean' sites within that domain or the 'clean' content within the sites.
It seems like an incredibly oppresive, over zealous and all powerful (with no consequences) bill. What compensation is available after they get it wrong, and they will? After months of appeals, what can the domain that's been exonorated expect? What's to stop that same domain being shut down again a day after reemerging?
In other words, who polices the police?
