UTAH Home of the NSA and other surveillance state paraphernalia
I'm in the southern part of the state where we are (in general ) left alone -- more than in Salt Lake City. But I don't expect that to stay the same for long.
I live in Utah. I just tried to sign into my Aereo's account. It brought up a message that I was outside my Market Area or some other such verbiage. I was given a choice to click a box indicating I AM in the Market Area. Once I agreed to this and clicked continue I am able to get to my recordings, view live TV, etc. So basically Aereo is getting around this by offering you a link about their TOS (who reads this crap anyway) and a check box acknowledging you are in the service area.
It is unfortunate with the society that we live in that stuff like this happens. I have mixed feelings about this. Because unfortunately abuse of power happens (way too often). When someone has the authority to put you in jail, shoot you, etc. there needs to be a careful oversight of these activities to make sure they are justified. So for a police officer to be able to exert this kind of authority and power from the driver seat of his police cruiser really bothers me. I am also VERY concerned about the militarization of the police. The military is there to fight the enemies of the state. The police are there to protect and serve. When the police become the military the citizens become the enemy.
My aunt lost her husband this way. He pulled a car over for a broken signal light. When he approached the car he was shot in the face point blank killing him. (The car was stolen and the theives thought that's why they were pulled over.) That said, I don't think this legislation is a good idea. I don't think my aunt would either. This is a risk that comes with the job... and the potential for abuse is HUGE.
Someone holding up a sign warning of a speed trap, or a person who has purchased a radar detector? Shouldn't both go to jail? Or perhaps the people selling the radar detector should go to jail? Heck, let's throw all parties into jail for the sake of $$$$
This goes hand in hand with the for profit prison system. When I was arrested (failure to appear for a nonmoving violation of not having my car registered but out on the street) I was charged $12 each day for the privilege of being incarcerated. Regardless of if I were convicted or not. It's all about money. Make no mistake. Police are there to protect and serve, not fill the city's coffers with money. Oh, wait this is Amerika. I forgot...
Democrats / Republicans two sides to the same coin. They don't care about the oath to the Constitution. Most have been bought and sold by corporate and other interests.
You should also remember that Ben was an INTELLIGENT troll and a gossip. He would use his wit to spark creative discussion and debate. Unlike most trolls on the internet, who ignore the old adage: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool; rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.
I agree with Tim on this issue. Similar to the paradox of saying: I don't believe in what you are saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it! If every time there was a miscarriage of justice (particularly when a jury has decided a verdict) the Federal courts swoop in like Deus ex machina; this subverts the judicial system and nullifies "a jury of one's peers". Constitutional principles must be maintained and upheld, or we will lose the balance of power and be left with tyranny.
