"Unpaid internships" might disappear if the minimum wage was abolished. Then consenting adults could decide what someones skills were worth. The minimum wage is a poor way to fight poverty, because it enriches high school students and bored retirees, as well as single moms. If you want to help the poor, help the poor, don't horribly distort the market.
What scandal? A bunch of hippies don't like that she's famous and they are not? Hey, why not form a union of backup musicians?! Or maybe petition congress for a law. Give me break. She didn't get the kickstarter money for Joe Nobody on bass.
Somewhat unrelated, but people should understand that piracy in the US can not affect the US economy. That $20 I didn't spend on a CD is still spent on something, perhaps a meal, or perhaps a video game. All US piracy can potentially do is redistribute money in the economy.
Now international piracy _can_ affect the US economy. A Chinese or Indian or Swedish dollar that is not spent on a US CD, potentially goes to a local business.
You don't understand. I have written industry code. There are many companies who develop standards and codes.
Say I write a code on the proper design of reciprocating compressors. Then some government organization says, "Hey, we're too lazy to develop our own standard, just follow that guys standard." Now I lose my copyright? How does that make sense? Sure, if the government body wants to contribute something to the standard and its development, sure, it can go into public domain. But just because some bureaucrat decrees something, bam, public domain? That makes no sense.
When the "golden age of piracy" is gone, we'll have a lot more to worry about because the internet will be broken. You will never stop piracy without massive government surveillance.
Sharing media has always been here. The internet just allows you to monitor it and freak out. Nothing has changed.
I agree. This is a perfect example of "a lowering tide drops all boats." Vegas hated online gambling because they thought it was taking money away from them. In fact, it was creating more money, by keeping interest in the game high between trips to Vegas.
That's not even all of it. By making it illegal and difficult to get money into and out of the sites, the whole thing became more risky, culminating in lots of people losing money.
This is similar to piracy, with media companies thinking piracy is a lost sale, when in fact it keeps people engaged with media they otherwise couldn't afford. Playstation and XBOX are going to learn this soon when they announce their expensive new systems with download-only games and locked down ecosystems. These next gen consoles are going to be disappointed in sales.
I'm totally with you. When a large oil companies "requests" a reporter not post images of an oil spill, or leaked company memos, they should honor those wishes.
> But I'm a very good customer of my local grocer. Do you think that should mean anything if I occasionally shoplift there too?
Piracy has much more in common with fare-evasion than stealing.
Here's a better example. I buy a monthly bus pass and ride the bus. Rarely, I'll forget to get a bus pass on the 1st of the month. I'll usually apologize to the bus driver and say I get a bus pass and forgot today. The few times it happened, the drivers are grumpy, but let me on.
Now technically, I should pay the single-ride bus fare. But that is ridiculous. I buy a pass. I already contribute. Technically, I shouldn't have this free ride, but logically, of course I should.
> bodies representing the public are excluded from any and all negotiations
What? Who do you think are creating all these ridiculous laws? So now you want to create a new government department to replace the old ones that weren't doing a good job?
Here's a solution. Get governments out of the business of business. Reduce regulations and anti-market laws. We will never find the right angels to protect us, so lets stop trying.
IPs =/= people. If SHE is going to be charged, then the prosecution has to show that SHE downloaded the file. If a threatening phone call was made from a certain number, you don't just charge the owner of the phone for the crime. You have to prove who made the call.
Mass Effect 3 was garbage. It had the most trite, politically correct, idiotic ending of a video game I've seen in a while. ME1 and ME2 were brilliant. They had some of the best sci-fi ever created. The physics was solid. The ME2 Lazarus story line, where you essentially are a pawn for a rich racist corporation, was awesome. ME3 burned all that development for eco-bullsh!t ending. Plus, they had 1st purchaser codes for the PS3 version. It has been difficult, but I have not bought any EA games since then. Which sucks, because I know some of the guys who work at Bioware.
You don't understand what coincidence means. It doesn't mean something exists for no reason. It means there is no relationship between *multiple* events. If I snap my fingers right now, a light *somewhere* goes on. Is their a casual relationship between those two events, or are they unrelated? If it is the latter, it is a "coincidence" that both occurred at the same time.
No. Satellite is a broadcast medium. The internet is a communication medium. Unless the goal is to break the internet and turn it into another broadcast medium, you can never stop piracy.
You can wiretap my phone, but when I realize it, I can talk in code. There is nothing you can do about it.
