The sad part to this story is that I have to tell my son to google stuff all the time. You would think, with him being 17 and fairly tech literate, I wouldn't have to tell him.
And I would have to say something more along the lines of 5 to 7 years would be an even better length. Why would they need 20 years? If the point is to make a profit from their creation, if it hasn't happened within 5 years, it probably isn't going to happen at all.
Bite me! I remember 300 baud modems too, and guess what, where I'm at, I'm lucky if my dsl hits 512k. So I really don't care what you opinion is in this instance. The telcos need to get off their collective asses and invest in upgrading our infrastructure. There is absolutely no reason why they couldn't upgrade to fiber, they simply don't want to reduce their enormous profits.
Did they even look at the site before it went up? Look at the picture the watermark looking seal says copyright enforcement group. Don't care who they hired, as blatant as this is they deserve to be hammered.
You won't have to try hard, just get verizon to deploy it everywhere. If it was available here, trust me, I'd be all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake. And before anyone says anything, I WAS the fat kid.
Do I know all the ins and outs of copyright law? No, I don't, but I do comprehend the basics and, more importantly, I understand how it is being abused.
Also I am more than willing to admit that I'm not an economist or business manager, so no, I don't necessarily have great ideas about how to generate revenue streams. I do, however, understand that some people here do have this knowledge, and I can follow the discussions and understand their ideas.
In reality, how an artist stays employed ISN'T our problem. As has been stated many times, no one is owed an income, it is something that must be continuously earned. I certainly don't get a check every week for sitting on my couch doing nothing. I've created things that qualify for a copyright but no one just brings me money. Why should an "artist" be any different?
Duh! Techdirt reports nothing. Mike posts things he finds worthy of discussion and we discuss. Are you new here, or just another anonymous cowards who thinks his $.02 is really worth that much? And before anyone says anything else, I know how much my opinion is worth, which means it only has value for me.
So where does that leave people who don't have a static IP account through their ISP? If they blocked me and the power goes out, when my modem reboots, it gets a new IP address. Have I now circumvented their technological block?
Considering the increase in the ability to communicate and distribute over long distances, I believe copyrights and patents should be reduced to a maximum of 7 years with no extensions beyond that. When you take into consideration the amount of time involved in manufacture and distribution of things in the 18th and 19th century, you can understand why the original terms were so long. In today's world it can go from a glimmer in your eye to a product on the shelf in almost no time at all, so the extended terms simply aren't needed.
There are situations, as Church points out, especially with unit awards, where an individual may be entitled to an award, but it never gets documented. I'm entitled to a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, but it wasn't authorized until after I separated. The paperwork I would have to go through to get it added to my DD-214 is more trouble than its worth, so I'll just be happy knowing I should have it, even if it isn't listed. After all, that medal and $1 might get me a cup of coffee.
While you technically should be entitled to wear a purple heart if wounded in combat, unless, and until, you are actually awarded the medal you can not claim it or wear it. You are correct that these are often awarded with little or no ceremony, but wearing awards which have not been documented in your service record will get you charged under the UCMJ. Like in many fields, if it isn't in writing, it didn't happen.
I can't say that I disagree, the problem would come with setting up the organization to receive and distribute the payments. Especially considering how many start out well intentioned and turn into money hungry RIAA types.
I tend to disagree here. The discussion is with regards to the recording contract. If the initial tour support is included in their contract, it's a relevent inclusion in the discussion as the label will still require it to be repaid, but unless the profits of the tour are included in the contract, then they are rightfully excluded. Also, that was part of the Courtney Love quote, Mike's main point has to do with the article from The Root, not really what she was spouting. Her comments are anecdotal support, not the main story.
My guess would be that this is an organization of which the pharma companies are members, but not one that has actively pursued the question of which of its members want ACTA imposed as it is currently written.
