As more people decide to go without because of DRM it is going to be toxic enough that game devs will simply stop using active DRM. But then we have always online modes that can be more annoying than DRM itself. I'm actively avoiding those too.
"We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed - yet that is precisely what the internet, and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide,”
Really? Does the Internet allow for pro-democracy, good things to spread as well? How much of the traffic is devoted to promoting perceived bad things versus good things? And how much of that traffic you consider bad just because you don't like it?
“We need to work with allies democratic governments to reach international agreements to regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of extremist and terrorism planning."
What would be classified as terrorism to you? Some people fed up by repeatedly pointing government abuse that start breaking things to be heard? People planning massive protests against some governmental action or policy? Journalists helping people leak government secrets that are evidence of sever abuse?
We could be complacent on the old lady for not knowing the internet but we all know this isn't about solving the problem. Terrorism is an awesome scapegoat to justify inserting authoritarian measures. The UK is using it like crazy to implement Orwell/V officially.
Take note of the name: Richard Burr. It's either he supports torture as means to achieve the ends or he doesn't like Government transparency. Either of the two is bad.
Make sure he never sees the light of any representative role ever again during his life.
And they ask with a straight face why one would need to be a whistleblower these days given there are "official" channels for complaint. Channels you have either to beg pretty please with thousands of dollars in your hands, force it through with lengthy and costly lawsuits or just receive a middle finger in the and and be stuck with nothing. I hope thousands of Ed Snowdens rain on them like a Biblical plague.
Re: Do you want blacklisted? Because this is how you get Blacklisted...
These kinds of blacklists already exist in the edges of legality for litigious employees regarding labor laws. They lump legitimate lawsuits with frivolous ones. It would be abused.
I wonder if we'll be able to use the UK as a case-study on how blocking immigration and screwing your citizens that came from abroad and are living legally in your country actually harms the economy. Or the US.
I don't know how things work there but here you can give all your engineering opinions you want. They have ZERO legal value unless you provide the proper "legal responsibility annotation" (we call them ARTs here) along with said opinion and to generate such ARTs you have to be registered in the professional body that regulates the thing). This means you are assuming technical responsibility for said opinion, document, whatever. This doesn't apply for Government engineers as long as they are properly registered in the professional body (incidentally a government sanctioned body). You have to generate one ART (and PAY for its official registration) for every specific project, opinion or work you produce as an engineer (multiple documents and projects can be grouped under a single ART).
I truly doubt it's too different in the US. Even if you aren't registered with the proper govt bodies you still have your degree. You can talk about engineering as much as you want. You can produce academic works and you can prove traffic idiots wrong as much as you like.
Re: "Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time."
"we've retained lawyer Ken "Popehat" White to handle this matter"
Well, when I read that, knowing how good Popehat is I already expected a show and he succeeded in delivering. But yeah, that first punch was already critical, the rest was only mild kicks to the fallen, inert body for pure amusement.
So they finally agreed cord cutting is here and it's bad. The first question is: is it too late to act now? I'd guess for some companies it is. The second question is: what will they do with the fact? Will they offer stream services? Will they charge fair prices? Will they offer option of watching single events (say, sports)? This last question, what will they do, should have been asked a few years ago. Now it's going to be quite harder for some to promote the needed changes.
Boil the frog slowly. It won't feel before it's too late. Start implementing anti-competitive measures slowly but surely. Slowly degrade competitors connection speeds. Slowly.
The network side approach seems to be the most important one to me coupled with the other ideas exposed. The problem is, not all internet providers will be compliant. During the DDoS attacks researchers found out that a good chunk of the attempts came from a handful of service providers, most notable one from China. So this would need a deeper cooperation maybe with operators from bigger pipes, sea cables, cooperation from companies like Level 3 so the connection attempts can be blocked before even reaching the wider infra-structure. It's no small feat the world will have to pull.
Dude, you fail again. It's THE LACK OF REGULATION that is the problem here. It's just that Netflix isn't going to suffer from this LACK OF REGULATION that lets ISPs abuse their natural monopolies.
And regulation would have helped PREVENT or at least make 2008 crisis less spread and harmful for instance.
Start reading. Watch "Inside Job" just to have a glimpse of what the lack of proper regulations and the current widespread cronyism can do.
"but they note this is how American society as a whole has decided drug dealers should be treated. "
Right. Marijuana isn't being legalized all around, because society agreed we should be thought on drugs, right? And prohibiting alcohol worked wonders, right? I have no sympathy for the guy but stop saying bullshit.
