For all the handwringing about how sacred our data is supposed to be, why isn't there a simple law that punishes stupid?
Instead we lap up the breathless 'ZOMG SUPER HACKERS!!!!!!! SEND THE FEDS!!!!!' (hysterical given the source this time), believe them when they claim nothing bad can happen, & make another security researcher the target of a smear campagin.
This was so poorly coded, but we have laws allowing the government to black site the person who tried to warn the creator of their fsck ups. Then we 'believe' the story that nothing bad happened (they couldn't figure out how to not hardcode devs login & password into it, we trust their review of if anything happened?) & move on.
Stop blaming the messengers & start penalties for shit coding.
Much like DMCA notices need it, when it costs them money to screw up they magically get better at doing it.

A moment of silence for DSE.
Dr. Seuss will have no incentive to create new works, via ouija board.
The public domain is barren, try to do fair use you'll get a scare then!
4 lifetimes of control isn't enough, we'll collect more cash sitting on our duffs.
burma shave.

Florida... isn;t that the state where the prison guards boiled the mentally ill man to death, forced other prisoners to clean up the carnage, & they declined to press charges?
There is no real point to this law other than to allow them to hide more details & that works out well. I mean its not like we are still discussing if jet fuel can melt steel beams b/c information was hidden giving rise to conspiracy theories.
Do it for the victims! Do it for the families!
Of course if it benefits cops & companies who failed in some way from public scrutiny thats just a happy side effect.
I mean its not like we've seen families demanding footage of their loved one being murdered released & cops fighting that release until they can do a deep dive into the victim & find previous bad acts to excuse the death.

Robocalls for life for Pai!!!!!!!
Question - Perhaps consumers should file complaints with the FTC, since the FCC is stupid. Consumers are paying (in the case of POTS) a large amount of cash for caller id or caller id w/ name, under the impression it informs you who is calling you... but it just shows random shit to you that has no basis in reality. If we're paying for a service that is supposed to tell us who is calling & it fails to do that job isn't that misleading consumers while pocketing cash for a service that doesn't work as advertised?
Asking b/c I think the FCC won't make them change, but a couple billion in fines & forced refunds to customers who were ripped off might encourage them to get of their asses and fix this.

That he screamed bloody murder about how it ruined his entire life, then took a couple gloating victory laps when the unknown person died in the course of the trial?
Then stood wrapped in his they hate me cause I'm a conservative cloak after he publicly identified a woman as a nazi & gave his followers her details?
Somehow calling him a cokehead is bad, but him calling others names is a-okay.
Perhaps you need to learn to read & understand the full picture instead of what they tell you is the picture.
But then you already have made up your mind...
Where is your ridicule for Woods when he was stamping his feet when someone suggested he was a cokehead?

Re: Re:
See but if you are gonna report them for having meth, you show up with a camera & record it.
Letting them go after the field test returns a positive result can mean their ass, jailing a politician might mean their ass but at that moment they aren't a politician they are a drug addict.
When push comes to shove, no cop will fall on his sword for someone outside the thin blue line. The union will punish the politician who tries to do payback & getting rid of a cop is like treating herpes... you might remove the sores form view but that shits there forever... and the politician will get called out for tampering with our saviors against evil to protect his own image.
I can't take down a bent cop, I can't take down a bent politician, but I sure as hell can put something into action where they have to fight each other trying to take the other down to save themselves. The collateral damage coming off of that will expose much more than any whistleblower could ever leak safely.
But then I have faith in human nature, that self preservation trumps anything else or logical thought.

OMG FACEBOOK IS THE DEVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're holding children in cages.
We're hiring pedophiles, serial killers, & rapists to watch over them.
We've got agents placing bugs in citizens homes b/c they are brown.
We've got secret laws being used to hide wrongdoing.
We've got courts & oversight who see nothing wrong with hosting & encouraging the creation of more child porn.
But lets keep focusing on facebook instead of admitting its just another dog whistle to distract people from the simple fact that no one is minding the store, we have no rights, & even video showing a cop shooting us in the back of the head while cuffed and on our knees doesn't guarantee he will even be tried let alone convicted.
Society is a shitshow, and instead of trying to affix the blame on FB or Twitter or tech... how about we fix the fscking problems first then worry about where to assign the blame... not that we will every accept our culpability in handing them the right to do whatever they want to 'bad people' as long as they keep us safe, ignoring that when they run out of real and imaginary bad people they just start deciding we're the bad people.
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 12 Mar 2019 @ 7:21pm
So my question is...
Is my twitter account filled with enough vitriol and outlandish things so I can imply James Woods is a cocaine addict without him filing a defamation suit against me & prevailing?
Or do I need to up my game to the next level of accusing people of sleeping with kids while ignoring while I was enjoying my seniors discount at Denny's I was dating a 16 yr old?
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 11 Mar 2019 @ 3:36pm
One might think people would have learned the lessons of the past, but the stupid always think it will never happen to them.
We had gangs with purchased access to credit reports & info... and we are shocked that they managed to get access to other information?
Until there are punishments that actually hurt the bottom line this will continue with corps collecting the cash & pretending there was no way they could have stopped the evil hackers.
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 11 Mar 2019 @ 3:30pm
Thousands of people have been mugged by cops, aided by legislatures unwilling to fund them properly, with property worth more than the legal penalties had the case ever been brought.
Hand wringing but nothing changes...
Now they fscked a corporation and this is gonna be great.
Politicians trying to talk out of both sides of their faces trying to keep the cop lobby & corporate sponsorships supporting them.
But hey, this totally is winning the war on drugs!!!
Pay no attention to no drugs being scooped up in this, no dealers or head honchos busted.... just little people no one cares about being robbed under the color of law. Reminds me of that special law to get the terrorists and like 99.9% of the approved paper was for drug 'crimes'.
Time to start throwing rock candy into politicians cars and reporting them doing meth. We know the shitty field test will say its meth & perhaps if they start losing cars they might understand what they are doing to other people... but I doubt it as they will flex their power to avoid the same punishments unleashed on the little people.
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 8 Mar 2019 @ 8:17pm
Perhaps they really need to decide that the system needs to be cleaned up, that allowing these things to go unpunished have destroyed their reputation worse than anything they imagined would happen from a few bad apples.
If they can't stop corrupting & law breaking in their own ranks why do we let them have power over others?
