"I can't wait for this to be in the DLC for Farming Simulator 2018. "
Nah, it's going to be a skill you can unlock in game as you progress.
- plowshare use is unlocked after you begin Middle Ages - DRM overwriting is unlocked after you begin Contemporary Ages - Evade Prison is needed to use the previous skill without going to jail and lose your land
Why not a copyright pool maintained by the government itself that can be used by anybody willing to pay a standard price for a blanket license and then the artists are paid by a system that takes into account volume of works from said artist in the pool, popularity or any combination of factors that help spread wealth more evenly? Sure it can be abused and it would need constant auditing but it's better than leaving it in the hands of private entities who couldn't care less.
Of course I'd argue that copyright is poisonous and should be repealed in the current climate but maybe we can actually reach a middle ground where copyright is sane and actually helps culture instead of screwing it.
Can we please build some metadata network that links Comey to some meth lab or some terrorist cell? This would help drive the 'just metadata' point home. I'm sure you could link him to something obscure if you torture the metadata enough.
And maybe yank any credibility some people may be giving to the backdooring thing.
It seems we will end up rolling out that pseudo-encryption (with backdoors) and will only learn it's a terrible idea subsequently banning its implementation ever again when things naturally go wrong and billions are lost to crooks who will eventually find the key.
The evil me keeps saying 'let them screw it all and make it cost a lot so they will understand the problem'.
I think that we have to start by teaching tolerance to differences as early as to toddlers. Older people are much harder to change than the younger ones. We should also stop letting people encapsulate themselves in ideological bubbles with only stuff they agree. Facebook enables and encourages such bubbles. And when people are yanked out of their bubbles into real world they get scared. And they get violent.
There are other initiatives that could work and should be tried together but we reduce 'fake news' from spreading using a multi-pronged approach. I don't expect any meaningful measures to be adopted any time soon.
This would make rules restricting their ownership of the equipment vanish like magic. The power to force governments to work for the people are in the hands of the people. Cross your arms and simply stop the country until they do what's needed.
Of course this isn't happening when instead of actually thinking of the country people are worried attacking Team Blue or Team Red.
I'm going to pick up something slightly off topic here:
"For the tutorial, please refer only to what is in the *********public domain********* or prior art, regardless of whether or not one side or the other actually practices it." (emphasis mine)
Basic optics has been around since ancient Egypt so it's ok but Lidar related stuff? Diodes? That's life plus eternity. No public domain for thee!
(I'm grossly simplifying matters, my intention is just to bring some focus on the pillage of public domain that intellectual property is)
Even if VPNs were a definitive solution you'd still be shelling extra cash just to have basic functionality (privacy). This is wrong on multiple levels even if you disconsider Americans already pay a kidney for their internet connections.
And this is just another ugly episode of the dysfunctional history of the advertising industry. It's become a cancer. It's aggressive and it's out of control. And the other cancer (politicians) joined it.
"Maybe, just maybe, the RIAA should have taken that position originally, rather than hoping to keep the copyrights separate so that it could force internet companies to pay more. "
They couldn't go mafia style and demand money to let culture flow so they are in damage assessment mode trying to make the money they can with it. If there was more money to be made being total assholes they would go that route.
At the very least it seems she will be punished which should be a no brainer but it's actually a relief. Govt employees being held accountable for their misdeeds is a rare species nowadays.
"Why is it that all the sane thoughts on this seem to be coming from outside the government, and the craziest ideas coming from those in the highest positions of power? "
Because it's not about sanity, it's about control. They don't care about terrorists, they care about control.
