When I got my new box that enabled me to cancel cable, I actually wrote emails to HBO and Showtime, because I loved their original shows. I practically begged them to do what Starz was doing, and allow their stuff on Netflix, and I even told them I would be HAPPY to pay more for that. I would have no problem paying $9 for Netflix, and additional money for my Netflix account to also give me access to their stuff. I will not over pay in the same way that I was with cable however. Never again.
That's exactly what I'll do. I already cut my cable cord in favor of Netflix/Hulu. Maybe I shouldn't have answered honestly on that Roku customer satisfaction survey when it asked if I had gotten it to cancel cable, because I told them that was exactly why. It has been great, and I'm saving a TON of money. Go ahead, make Netflix a little less useful. I won't cancel that, it's cheap enough to keep anyway. But what I will do, is buy the more expensive box, pirate the stuff that I really want to watch that isn't available, and plug my external hard drive into the new box and watch from there, still on my TV.
Go ahead studios, if you really don't want me to spend my money on your stuff, then I won't. But that will not stop me from watching your stuff if I want to. I am trying to be reasonable, and you are not. I will not feel bad at all for not paying you.
"what good is a copyright to its owner if there is no one to sue?"
You are absolutely right!! I don't actually care if I get any credit for my work, I just want to be able to sue the pants off of anyone else who uses it!!
No. That is just foolish. For starters, you assume all the players will have no problem staying inside the crudely drawn boundary lines between legal use and illegal use. When in reality, the players on each side of the line are constantly trying to push those boundaries. That's why you have lawsuits, because each side wants more of the power, and they're trying to get the courts to tell them where that line really is. Essentially, rights holders will never feel that others are embracing new tech. in a manner that doesn't offend them, unless they aren't successful on their own anyway. Anything successful, and you'll always have the rights holders screaming "the money they're making should be ours!!!"
A friend of mine in college was in the Art program. He took a class where he had to build a sculpture. He took a bunch of old things he had laying around, including a car that didn't run anymore, and turned it into his class project. He did a great job, and got an A (A- iirc) because his artist teacher recognized it as art, and a job well done. If that is art, then this is art. If someone tries to tell me that Chevy could have sued this guy for using one of their cars in his sculpture, I will slap them in their face for being stupid. This is like that case. If you think this is piracy, you aren't informed enough for your opinion to really matter.

Are you trying to say that it would have been better to vote for someone you knew was going to screw you over, instead of someone you didn't know for sure would?? In what world is that a good thing???
Today's republican party is not fit to run the country, that's been proven. Now, Obama is doing his best to prove that the democrats aren't fit to run the country either. If voters finally learn this lesson, I think this is much better than having voted McCain into office to ruin the country, and continue letting people believe that the democrats could make it better...
Hahaha, I play, they got different styles...both studs. I pick my Celtics to come out of the east, but the Bulls are the scariest team in the league if you ask me. They've got one hell of a coach.
That's blatantly false. Just because you don't know where to look for something, doesn't mean it's not there.
Name an artist you like to a service like Pandora, and just watch as new stuff you might be interested in starts popping up in your playlist.
Record stores moved online, but that doesn't stop you from browsing through sections looking for new stuff like you used to in an actual brick and mortar store.
A sense of nostalgia over something does not make it better.
...do we make false advertising an impeachable offense??
I believe then, and only then, will we be able to stop every candidate from saying whatever they think will get them elected, and then completely ignoring their promises upon winning said election.
The alternative would have been one who purposefully took stands on either side of an argument based on which side would make him look better at the time, and his backup, who had a track record of being a corrupt leader.
People who voted for Obama didn't 'expect hope and change'. They didn't like what they had, so they 'hoped' for 'change'. The alternative offered no hope, and you're a fool if you think we'd be any better off today if we had gone down that road.
Check out some of the channels available on the Roku Channel store....not sure offhand where you can get a look though. Boxee also makes a set top box that is supposed to allow you to get most web content on your tv as well.
Personally, if I were a smart executive at a cable tv channel, I would also be broadcasting over the web. Let people watch live on the web as it's being broadcast on TV, or let them choose programming that has already been aired, and watch those with less/no commercials. A station like Comedy Central, Discovery, or the History Channel should be able to make a killing with this....just turn that web stream into an app that can be loaded onto Roku/Boxee/PS3/xBox360/etc. and then sit back and watch people ditch Comcast left and right... I have friends who really only have their TV subscription to watch those three channels whenever they don't feel like watching netflix. They would pay a monthly fee for them too. I really don't understand why this isn't happening.
This is what killed the "Music Industry" if you really need something to point at Jon B.J.

...Then getting home and realizing that the record was pure and utter GARBAGE, and you had just wasted your hard earned allowance money. Nobody wants to pay for crap anymore, but that's all the major labels want to put out.... it really is. that. simple.
"people who think they should be able to get unlimited something without having to pay more for it."
Right........because paying for the more expensive, higher speed, "unlimited" option shouldn't make you think that you can have unlimited access.... Unlimited only means unlimited if and when your internet provider says it does, and is subject to change at their whim, right??
I just ditched Comcast cable services in favor of Netflix and Hulu+ streaming services, because they're about 10% of the cost monthly, and I get more enjoyment from them. This type of move is designed to make that a much less viable option, so that AT&T in this case, can keep as many of their customers as they can, by ruining the alternatives. It's a greedy move that is enabled by a lack of competition. There is no disputing that fact.
I love my Roku. I can also buy like 10+ shows or movies from Amazon in a month, on top of my Hulu+ and Netflix subscriptions, and still be saving money vs. my old cable bill, and my TV viewing experience is orders of magnitude better.
